This story is well worth the read. Also, I'm not telling you guys anything the authorities don't already know. First off, i am not a newbie, but this is my first post, so treat me as you will. I have followed MJ's for over three years and have only now decided to become a poster. I have been sportsbetting for about five years, with little success, very little, actually. I am going to tell all of you a story from about a year ago that will amaze you, seriously. It still amazes the shit out of me. I will tell this exactly as it happened. None of the names will be changed to protect the innocent, as there aren't any. Enjoy.
My name is Bill, and I love to gamble. (I get it from my mom.) Anyway, I began playing poker fairly seriously about four years ago. Once our local casino closed their cardroom, I began to look for home games in the area. I made a contact on pokerpages.com (Delete if you have to, Jack) who lived only about half an hour from me. His name was Brent and shortly after this we began to play fairly regularly. We had good games once a week and we both were very consistent winners. Another guy i met around this time was a friend of Brent's who is a semi-frequent poster here, i actually turned him on to MJ's. His name is Tyler, and he can completley corroborate my story. Here goes.
Brent began booking a few very small bets from college buddies. He didn't have a lot of action, and we both used to bet on games. Also, we were both very tired of losing. So, I asked him if he wanted to become partners. He said yes. With the amount of poker players and gamblers we each know, this was surely a great business opportunity. Inside of a week, we had combined forces and had several small accounts set up. This was more for action, than anything else. And, who knows, maybe we'll make a few bucks at the same time. We'd go into NFL sundays with maybe $1000 in play. We had very limited action and plently of BR to cover the action we were taking. Anyway, the first month came and went, without more than a couple hundred dollars changing hands. That's when things took a dramatic change for the far worse.
While playing in our Monday night dealer's choice game, the topic of sportsbetting came up. Neither of us brought it up, as our fellow players were significantly older than both of us, and we wanted their respect, we never let it be known that we were doing something as evil and wrong as bookmaking. However, one way or another, word had somehow gotten out. A guy we played with, named Dan, asked us if he could start placing bets with us. Not seeing any harm in it, we said sure. We gave him a $100 max on each bet and decided we'd settle up every Monday night. As I said, we were very small time. The first month came and went without very much happening. Give a little, take a little. No big deal. Then, something happened. NBA began. In my opinion, this is far and away the toughest sport for the novice to cap. And what happened from then on will forever be known as The Streak. Lou Gehrig and Cal Jr. have nothing on this guy.
We began on the next tuesday night with a clean slate, 0 balance. Our hero placed seven NBA bets that night ranging from 50 to 100 dollars each. He went a respectable 1-6 for a loss of $555. Wednesday came and went without much of a change in the balance. Thursday is when shit began hit the fan. Between whatever football was on that night, and the basketball, Dan lost about $800. The amount owed was already well above what we wanted ever to be owed, but we settled up on modays, so we let it ride. Then comes Black Friday. Dan places ten NBA bets for a dollar each and goes 1-9. Now what do we do. He calls up on Saturday and loses about $2000 more. Don't get me wrong, despite his insistence, we know we're not getting paid. It's amusing at this point, and he's providing with the Holy Grail of sportsbetting fades, which we were able to somewhat utilize through other books. NFL Sunday came and Dan owed us about 4500 monopoly dollars. Anyway, the next week is the big one. Between betting, teasing, and parlaying everything, he was only down $100 after the week. Incredible. We let that ride since it was only $100. Here is when the shit broke the fan into a million pieces.
Tuesday, -$600, Wednesday, -$350, Thursday, 1 win- 21 losses-$1850. Not bad for three days. Down $2800 after just three days. With Black Friday, Part 2 just around the corner, Brent and I decided to give Dan some soft lines to help insure that he got something back. He rewarded us for the nice lines by going an absolutely astounding 1-19. If you have ever heard of a system that hits at a better rate than this one, which hit about 74% overall, I'd like to hear about it. 2-40 in 2 days, and a four-day loss of over $4500. On Saturday, he calls, and since we only have a $100 limit, he's screwed. So, he wants to key four college BB games and put in 20 $100 parlays with each game. He wants to parlay both sides of every game that day. We agree to let him do them for fifty and he goes 2-2, not bad for this guy. He loses about $2000 for the day. Sunday, he pulls the same shit and loses again. His six-day total is a laughable $12,600. Tomorrow is payday.
We don't hear from him 'til Wednesday. Brent gets a call from him and he tells Brent some serious shit is going on. Brent agrees to meet him at work. He proceeds to tell a story about some lady who found his betting notebook and turned it into the police. The police allegedly arrested him and he tells us that he's going to turn us in unless we pay his $500 lawyer fee. We decided not to pay this. His story is that the police have all of our phones tapped and that we need to avoid each other for a while. He also told us that the cops made him try to lose as much as he could to us. This guy is a fukkin nut. Anyway, we write it off, and decide close up shop.
I heard from him about a month later. He calls and confesses that it was all lies, what a relief. He says he wants to make everything right. We meet with him and he pays us $525 and we agree he will pay us $500 a month and he can continue betting. Along the line, he makes up a cockamamie story about having all this money from an accident settlement, but it's hard to get to. Whatever, he was paying us and giving us the occasional 74% fade. Fine with us. Having not heard from him for a month, I pretty much forget the whole thing until he calls one day to make a couple of bets and set up a payment time. He goes a predictable 0-2 and agrees to meet with us the coming Saturday.
Well, that Saturday never came. March 12, 2003, I was getting ready for my 9:30 class when there was a knock on the door. I walked to the door and said, "Who's there?" "Police", someone said. "C'mon, who is it?" "Police, open up." I said, "you gotta be shitting me, hold on" I'm standing in nothing but my boxers, I was gonna go change, but what's the difference? They came in, questioned me, told me I was going to prison, despite my clean record. Then they ransacked my place and took tons of shit, including the computer I'm using right now. Then, they questioned me for a couple of hours and threw me in the can. Nice start to the day.
Of course, the same thing was happening to Brent simultaneously. Lucky for me, I know a few cops around here. Brent woke up with two guns pointed at his head. Holy balls. Anyway, Dan had gone to the cops and told them that I called him up and said, "I'm gonna fukk you up, and then i'm gonna fukk up your family." So, several phone converstions and a cash transaction were all recored by police surveillance. We were originally charged with felonies, but they were later reduced to misdemeanors. We never served any more jail time, but we are both still on probation and $paying$ for our sins. I've taken care of my financial obligations and only have the IRS to look forward to in a few years. I've been assured by many people on that.
I just thought some of you might enjoy this story, and there is no football for a few days. Anyway, I've learned several things through this ordeal
1. Know who you're dealing with
2. There is no such thing as an easy dollar
3. Never underestimate the potential of someone else's lunacy
4. The uglier an NBA play looks, the better it is. (Try it, it works)
Thanks guys,
