Last season against good passing teams, Tech gave up over 300 yards in four of the five games they lost. Look for USC to try the long ball until Tech can prove they can stop them. One of Tech's biggest weakness's last year was against the run up the middle. Weak LB's and Davis Def. Lineman out for the year hurt the Hokies up the middle. This is an area they improved upon with recruiting as well as the return of Davis. The Trojans will be able to run somewhat on Tech, but not as bad as some teams did last year. Right now the kicking game at Tech is up in the air. The placekicker is gone and Vinny Burns was hot and cold last year and is being challenged this summer for his job. Special teams may be off a bit this year for Tech, I hope not being a Hokie, but it's time for Tech to face the music....six and six this year and their bowl streak may be over.

2 more angles to look at for this game.

USC is 8-1 ATS as double digit road favorites!

USC superstar player Reggie Bush sprained his thumb at practice. He is a RB but he is also a p/ko return man and he is an exceptional WR out of the backfield. Not sure how effective he will be catching the ball with a sprained thumb or how severe his sprained thumb is. But he def. is playing. Just add this to the long list of USC injuries and distractions. What a ridiculous off-season for USC.
:cursin:

*hm23 that was a nice breakdown of the USC/V-Tech game. Thanks.

BMW is now a Volkswagen. Seriously, this is not unexpected from such a hypocritical, myopic, gutless sham of an organization. Bloom got the shaft earlier and now Williams...is made an example of.

VT's Randall had a Jekylll/Hyde season in '03. But w/o Vick breathing down his neck he may yet turn in an excellent season.

Tech needs to get Randall in rhythm early by playing to his strengths - short passes and designed roll-outs. At some point in the 1Q, the Trojan corners need to be tested deep.

Leinart doesn't throw a really good deep ball, in my estimation. The Hokie secondary doesn't need to be overly concerned w/ the deep out for ex.

VT's secondary baffled me last year, given their talent. They still have talent remaining and is capable of keeping the Trojan horse from pulling away, if not pulling out...ahem.

I think Scott's take on this game is prob. right on...USC asserting themselves in the 2H. But will it be enough?

BTW, Scott, you may be opinionated and I may press you on some matters, but you know USC and can articulate your opinions well, if not always remove the tether of your bias, which clouds your reasoning at times.

Like Beaner, I always read your posts. And while Beanhead is maybe good for a few laughs (if only that) at least you have something to say about the games in the of all sports - college football. I can't wait till Sat.

Thanks for the nice words hm23. Look forward to reading more posts from you as well.

I am a little worried about this game. I can't wait for kickoff tom. I can make good argument for USC to beat Tech soundly or for USC to win in a close game. Within in the last 2 weeks I can now realistically see a potential upset which makes me very uneasy. Just get this game started!

Remember USC is a SUPERB 2nd half team and the coaching staff always seems to make incredible adjustments. If the game is close or even if USC is down at half, USC 2h is a STRONG bet.

For V-Tech to win they need to force turnovers and have great special teams play. IF they accomplish both they def. can win this football game. I do not expect the USC offense to be explosive but I do expect the USC defense to be very good.

V-Tech is +1150 on the money line! :scared I think there is some value in that money line bet.

I will never bet against USC but I am not afraid to offer advice to bet against USC or provide angles not supporting USC. I either will bet on USC or pass and I am passing on this game.

Trends and Tips

VA TECH is 28-10 ATS vs. non-conference since 1995

VA TECH lost to California 52-49 in last year?s bowl game

VA TECH was 8-7 SU and 5-7 ATS last season

VA TECH lost five straight games ATS to close the season

USC was 12-1 SU and 10-2 ATS last season

USC 7-0 ATS 1st road game of the season

USC 9-3 ATS as away favorite under Carroll

USC is 0-2 SU and 1-1 ATS versus the ACC

Lotta money going on V-Tech.

USC was -1500 to win straight up and now is currently -1000. V-Tech was +1100 and now is +800 to win straight up.

The line was USC -17.5 and some places had it -18 but now it is currently -16.5. Money is going on V-Tech.

SEEMS like money is going on V-Tech, anyway.

At *********, 56% to 59% of the people, depending on which line is used, are on USC. Carib reports that of all the wagers on this game there, 50.5 are on USC, while 49.5 are on VT.

For some reason, the books seem to be enticing money on USC. I wonder why? Is it that they sense a VT cover and therefore want to make a killing with most folks on the Trojans?

I am on VT all the way in this one.

For you, I hope your team wins the game. An outright upset wouldn't shock me, though.

its a long season. i highly doubt books give two shits who wins or covers this game. season hasnt even started and were all talking "public this and that". its easy to make a case for both teams. usc is loaded and has the ability to pound virginia tech. conversely, tough to go against beamer as a double digit dog. honestly, i think usc can name the score. but do they want to? its easy to say that "usc wants to make a statement" but season opening games are never crisp. usc is clearly superior and can win by 24 to 27 points if they play a clean game. not sure if theyll do it though. i cant see vtech scoring more than 10 or 13 points though. we'll see.

gman2 - I agree. I think that the under is the play. I feel that both of these teams will sputter a little on offense, and that it will be a defensive struggle in the first half - 10-3 usc. I think that things will pick up a bit in the second half, and that Va Tech gets its' token defensive score. . . but it's a safety and not a touchdown! Yeah! 10-5 late in 3rd. . . usc finds it's rhythms, and posts 2 quick td's and then a field goal. Va Tech answers with a field goal to make it 27-8. usc shows some rust with porus o-line, and suspect wr's. Leinart is finally sacked! Running game keeps the ball away from va tech. When va tech gets the ball - they struggle as well. Randall is the solo bright spot on the offensive side of the ball, but can't carry his team to victory, and gets discouraged early by relentless trojan pass rush and consistent coverage.

Good luck Mjolnir!

Less than 2.5 hours to go and if the line keeps going down I am gonna put a bet on USC. I am gonna wait right before kickoff.

The more and more I keep thinking about this game I get nervous. I am nervous about how the USC offense will perform but I am confident the USC defense will dominate tonight. You can't cover high chalk unless you have a strong defense so now I think USC will cover in this game but not in a blowout type fashion. USC prob. be up 10pts in the 4th and scores a TD or 2 late in the game to cover the number. That is my prediction so I might place a "small" bet on USC. A tight game with USC pulling away late as V-Tech tires down and USC offense starts to gel.

My Prediction: 31-10 USC win but a closer game than the final score suggests.

To those who have USC or are unsure about USC here is a key quote from Pete Carroll today. "I feel like this is the most experienced group we have had in the years we've been here in terms of our system and what we've done."

I just wagered 1 unit on USC -15.5! I gotta have action on the first game of the year. Couldn't hold back!

Best running back tandem in football?

Best running back tandem in football?

What are you fawking nutz?
"USC will have an outstanding run game this year with Reggie Bush and Lendale White as the best running back tandem in the country."

I know you are a huge USC fan, but come on...
I think Auburn has the best running back tandem in the country with Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown. Both of whom turned down chances to go into the draft. Williams would have been a mid-first rounder and Brown would have gone in the second round. Can you say the same about Reggie Bush and Lendale White? I appreciate the info and research you've done on this game, just think a little before posting such an ignorant statement. geez.

I think Auburn has the 2nd best RB tandem in the country but Bush and Lendale are much, I repeat, MUCH more talented than Cadilac Williams and Brown. I am huge fan of Cadilac but he cannot do the things Bush can do. Remember, Bush and White both were freshman last year and watch them this year.

Bush is Marshall Faulk.

White is similar to Marurice Claret but faster.

*I know it doesn't mean anything but Bush was the #1 RB out of high school and White was a top 10 RB out of high school the same year.

Bush is more talented but White is my favorite RB. However, Bush is getting ALL the ink along with Leinart.

I agree that you can make a strong argument that Cadilac and Brown are the best tandem but I think USC's tandem is more talented but maybe not as proven. We shall see who is right! Good luck to Auburn this year and I really like your program and enjoyed the USC series vs Auburn.
