I have always wanted to go " Down under " and am taking the plunge...Quantas had a really cheap internet deal...for an extra hundred, they threw in Auckland New Zealand. Any world travellers on board?? Going in November-Dec (their late spring-early summer) Appreciate ANY tips, we are staying at Bed + Breakfasts. Looking at beaches they are big on topless and nude beaches...I may have to get a new eyeglass prescription before leaving heyes heyes heyes

Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb

Experience the incredible three hour adventure that will take you to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge some 134 metres above sea level. You can climb day or night.

Bookings are recommended.

The Bridge's total length including approach spans is 1149 metres and its arch span is 503 metres. The top of the arch is 134 metres above sea level and the clearance for shipping under the deck is a spacious 49 metres. The total steelwork weighs 52,800 tonnes, including 39,000 tonnes in the arch.

The 49 metre wide deck makes Sydney Harbour Bridge the widest Longspan Bridge in the world.

Following check-in, you will be thoroughly briefed by the professional staff. Safety on the climb is their No. 1 priority and certain conditions will apply.

A specially designed "BridgeSuit" worn over personal clothing, harness and communications equipment will be issued to each climber before commencing preparation on the climb simulator. All climbers are attached to a static line for the duration of the climb.

A professional trained Climb Leader will accompany each group and will be able to answer any questions you may have in regards to the Harbour Bridge and Sydney sites.

The Climb Leader will be equipped with the latest in digital photographic technology to capture the moment. All climbers are issued with a complimentary photograph of their climb group.

Above text and all photos on this page courtesy of ?1999,Bridgeclimb
"We arrived at the Bridgeclimb office in plenty of time for the informational video and introduction.

After signing consent forms and taking a breathalyzer test (yes, they test to see if you have been drinking alcohol!), we were fitted with our climb suits. The light, full body suits went over our clothing, but first we had to empty everything out of our pockets and remove all jewelry.

After we put on our suits, we were fitted with a harness, and supplied with gloves, fleece and rain jackets, and a radio headset, from which we could listen to the guides instructions and explanations. The fantastic staff had only one thing in mind throughout the entire experience - our safety and enjoyment.

Once in the harness, we hooked onto a static line and practiced walking up and down the ladders and walkways. Only when we were comfortable with the equipment were we brought out onto the bridge.

Our climb on the exterior of the Harbour Bridge was one of the most exhilarating experiences of our lives! Our enthusiastic guide made us feel very comfortable and was very knowledgeable of the history of the bridge and the city.

Once we reached the top of the bridge, we gathered together for a complimentary group photo, with the Sydney Opera House as the backdrop. The Sydney Harbour Bridgeclimb is one of the most popular activities in the city - and rightfully so!"

Thanx Scott, I considered that....trouble is it has to be scheduled well in advance and you take a chance of wet windy weather....it is also a half day.
You can get same view unscheduled from Bridge Pylons for a few dollars....the climb is 150-175...lots of pints of Fosters would go wanting.....

Dogphish,

The opera house is a worthwhile tour, Shakespeare's pies is a good place for a quick meal, take in a wildlife park, go on a harbor cruise, Queen Victoria Mall is a nice place to shop, and Bondi beach is a great place to hang out. But by all means drink Victoria Bitter instead of Fosters. They send that shit here because nobody there likes to drink it.

Be prepared for a very long and boring flight.

The people are very friendly, and you will have a great time.

Scott,

I remember it being approx. 14 hours from L.A.

I am pretty sure that I watched at least 2 movies, ate 3 times, and drank lots of beer.

It was definitely one of the best trips I have ever taken.

If you are interested in seeing Australia, check out a company named SmarTours out of New York.

If I were not such a "caveman" on the computer, I am sure that I could include link to their site. :cursin:

Scott, for what it is worth I looked at tours, there may be some cheaper ones out there, I figure by doing all planning myself, Quantas flight, Bed and Breakfasts, some hotels, rent car in New Zealand, travel pass in Sydney is good for all buses and Ferry, do not think I need car, there transportation system goes everywhere, beaches, museums, pubs, I am saving at least 2k. I went to automobile club to rent car in Auckland, there people quoted me $500....I went direct via the Internet for $275. The biggest obstacle is the shrinking value of the US dollar...3 years ago the aussie dollar was 50 cents..now it is 75 cents and climbing, foreign countries are getting smart, they realize the dollar is being printed much like rolls of Charmin...

Sorry...Sydney is one place in Oz that I actually haven't spent much time in. (I live in Tasmania).

BOHICA is right, Fosters is shit!!...But so is VB. (Unless you like stale cats piss, but I'll assume you don't!) :D

Don't mess about with the beer...Boags Premium. One of the nicest beers you will come across.
If you like Bitter beers, then go the XXXX, which is SO much better than VB (Victoria Bitter).

Circular Quay is a great spot. Lots of nice restaurants and bars. Also the maritime museum there is worth a look.
The Powerhouse musuem is also good fun. (You didn't mis-read that! :D)

There will be topless women on most beaches...Plenty of nude beaches a bit further north, up the coast, but I'm sure you'll find one or two in the Sydney area if you look hard! ;)

It will be starting to get pretty warm going into Dec (30+ C), and it is reasonably humid.

Public transport is pretty good too. There's a monorail that connects the city centre to Darling Harbour and a few other attractions. The train system is also good, branching out from the city.

King's Cross is the, er, red-light district!! (10 minute train or taxi ride from the inner city.) Plenty of strip clubs etc...but also a couple of good pubs/nightclubs.

Other than that...SCG for a couple of games of cricket if you wanna check out the 'local' sport. (Plenty of beer there!...But you'll find that will be a fairly constant theme ;))

You are coming out here at just the right time. Weather is warming up and the 'white pointers' will be in view on the beaches (Bondi and / or Tamarama just south of it). Eastern suburbs beaches are not far from the CBD. The Harbour Bridge climb is awsome but does take a good few hours. Star City Casino is @ Darling Harbour on the waterfront. Good sight-seeing around Darling Harbour. Stay away from the Fosters!!

Sydney is a great city where I have lived on and off for about 15 odd total years. Will probably end up back there for good sometime in the future.

You'll have a great time and will probably not want to go home I'm tipping!!

Doesn't get much better than Australia! The reason I say that may have something to do with the fact that I'm an aussie but seriously, unbelievable place! Plenty to check out and like paw and christo said, there is all sorts of shit to check out so I'm sure you'll have a blast. Don't worry about the snakes and spiders, they only come out at night if you leave food out! Have a good trip mate and christo said it best, XXXX is the beer you need to drink while you're down under. One of Queensland's finest!

Interesting comments regarding Fosters, I had one at my Sports watering hole last Monday nite, a fresh tapped one for $5.00 I might add, and I barely choked it down, thinking you blokes down under can't make brew...figured it was exported roo piss....Thank God I am hearing there is real beer in Oz.....I hear Doyles is good for Fish+Chips...Keep tips coming...Thanks

DF, you'll know there's good beer in OZ once you have a solid session on it one night. Definitely stronger than the 'watered down' stuff in the states. Plenty to check out in Queensland if you get up there. Beaches, museums, you name it! Great islands off the coast also. Weather will be great at that time of the year and the public transport is awesome as far as getting a taxi or bus is concerned.

Sydney and Melbourne aren't much different than any US city (besides the fact that the females find the nasally accent of a midwesterner charming). I had a much better experience in Auckland. I would try and spend more time in New Zealand and if you can get down to Queenstown, NZ, it has everything that you want as far as outdoor adventures (great white water rafting, skydiving, bungee, helicopter rides etc...)

. . . and they pour Steinlager like it's water. :)

Hell sounds like the place for me, no crime, guns and all the gangs and murders I have to put up with in this hell hole called Vegas, and it has beaches nude women and I bet great fishing , i need to move there,I HATE GANGS, MURDER,CRIME AND RACIAL PEOPLE, sounds like a place i could just relax and not worry about stuff like I do in Vegas. can i get dtv for American fb and baseball? also have pro baseball there to watch, ready to move. Please tell me they don't have all the political bs that I have here, that is almost as bad as murders, gangs and crimes or in the same book. Need me a nice little simple beach house and would have no worries. :)
