been using dial up where i live since i got on the internet. moving to indiana and have all the options.

what's best? DSL or Cable or what?

if i get cable, should i also get cable tv or keep dtv? only problem with dtv is, i need 7 receivers and covenants only allow one dish. i know i can run more than one tv off of one receiever but i would prefer 7 different stations.

thanks in advance.

I would suggest Cable - Sure it cost a little more than DSL, but much faster connection and is 99% of the time up and running, goes down here and their but really not that much and when it does it is resolved quick.

No cable required when getting internet, they are seperate.

Once you get it, you will be much happier, any other ?'s let me know.

Ditto that DJtranks,

I have had both. I have DSL now and I liked cable a little bit better as well for the reasons above. Jack, make sure you have your own modem because companies like comcast usually like to rent them to you by the month. If you have your own you can just give them back their equipment and not pay those monthly fees.

I would keep DTV too, I just got it 6 mo ago and love it. Not much to cable without a descrambler.

Jack, I just got cable. I agree w/DJ. Plus our cable is billed monthly- no year long contracts and it costs less when you get a bundled package so plenty of options. I can add/drop premium channels, music channels and the internet each month. Plus my cable hasn't given me any trouble * crossed fingers *

I've had all 4 of those things(DSL, Cable modem, DTV, Digital cable) at various times and in different combinations. Currently have cable modem and digital cable. This is my favorite combo. As mentioned above, cable modem almost never goes down and to me, is a good bit faster than DSL.

I hated DTV because the signal was lost if there was heavy cloud cover, much less any sort of rain. People that swear by DTV seem to insist that it never happens, but it ALWAYS happened to me. 1 minute here, 2 minutes there. All the time. Very annoying. I have friends who love it and say it doesn't happen, but very often i'll be at their house watching TV and it happens. Maybe they just don't notice it. Also hated it because of how complicated it became to hook up 4 or 5 tv's so they could be on different channels. People more technically inclined surely have no problem with it, but to me it was a pain.

thanks for the replies so far. looks like cable internet is leading the way so far.

kosar, i thought you have AOL :D

i've had dtv for tv for years but i think cable tv is going to be more logical with my new situation.

I used to be a cable-hater for TV purposes, but Comcast has really stepped up things in the last few years. With OnDemand for TV shows and movies, I think they have moved beyond the Satellite providers. Now we jsut need a Sunday ticket!

Cable vs. DSL for internet. This depends on your exact location and how close you are to the nearest hub. I currently have cable and have not had any problems with it since I installed 6 months ago. Had BellSouth Fast Access DSL in Altanta and was only 3 blocks from the main hub. I had problems with outages once every 6 weeks or so. When the service was up, the speed was excellent, though.

I agree with kosar. The combo pack of cable and internet together makes it the way to go, IMO.

Jack, Best Buy has a special splitter for DTV, it only splits out 4 ways tho, and has to be used with an Dual LNB. I would assume if you desparately need to keep the Sunday Ticket that you may be able to use 2 of the splitters to be able to go 7 ways....want to say the price on it was like $80 although don't remember for sure.

if you are able to get comcast, i would highly recommend it for both cable and internet (get a price break when you have both), and as Dawgball mentioned......on demand is SWEEEEEEEEET!!! (you will have to rent extra digital boxes if you want to get the digital channels on more than one TV tho) $5 or $10 a month depending on which type box you want.

and well, don't think i need to tell you how highly i think of cable internet...LMAO, you saw what my connection rates to this site used to show. now it's like flipping a page on a book.

Cable modem in my opinion too. With DSL as dawg touched on your speed can vary according to how many people in your area are getting a line of the hub. With cable you rarely have to worry about it. I also have digital cable thru the cable company as well and haven't had any complaints.

I would recommend cable for internet, have road runner myself and as i far as Tv is concerned, depends how much sports ur watching, because u cannot get more games that directv but that is tottally depends on ur situation. I would not go without sundany ticket and the nba package that dtv has, nobody has anything close to it. As far as being only allowed having one exposed dish, u can buy lawn ornaments to cover the dishes up, like fake rock covers..

Having used cable and DSL at various locations (business and personal), I would have to recommend going with the cable modem. Every person that I have talked into switching to cable has been happy with the change. Besides, the phone companies already have enough ways to screw you out of money. :)

I had Comcast internet for a couple of years. My upload speed was capped at 30kbps...just could not take it anymore as I upload/download 20-30 gb per month. I switched to dsl and now have an upload cap of 80 kbps. I am also satisfied and content with my download speed which is very comparable to cable. DSL fulfilled my needs better.

I have both-- cable @ home and DSL @ work--

I like the cable much better-- it is a bit faster. The day I switched from dial up to cable I wondered why I waited so long!

I have DTV-- it is a LOT better now that locals are avail.Plus you cant beat the NFL ticket-- UFC etc...

Cable for internet - even on the island its still the best thing going. Had the same bellsouth fastaccess DSL as dawgball when I was in Atlanta, and that was the fastest connection Ive seen. Fiber optic T1 line had pings in the teens. There was no modem, just hardwired into it.

Havent had nearly the problems with DTV as kosar, so Id stick with that. Outages few and far between and satellite is the only way to go for 1080i. We circumvented the problem of 4-5 screen setup by purchasing different HD boxes (Hughes, Samsung, etc.) that have independent remotes. Although I will admit its pretty messy with the wiring and it was a beast to get set up.

i work for comcast jack, so let me know where you are moving to, i may be able to get you a good deal. Cable internet is by far the best way to go. Comcast is actually doubling their speed again where your download will be 6MB/second and upload will be about 384kb/second. tv is great as well too with on-demand,dvr and alot more movie channels. they do have some good sports channels, but nothing compared to satelitte. they will not get the NFL Sunday Ticket, but they have everything else sportswise.
