YOu know where to find the system tray??? The little section on the bottom toolbar where the clock and a bunch of icons are???

Do you see one in there that indicates "wireless network"??? and have you turned the wireless on???

(asking basic questions becasue my experience is even the best sometime step over things as a boo boo. *G* remember once working on a teletype for 3 hours with no joy, started through the book and step three was "check the fuse" and guess what???)

well, i THINK i turned it on, but may have turned it back off and don't know how to tell....LOL the FN+F2 is what is used to turn it off and on.

and you're doing this EXACTLY right for me.....don't overlook the obvious since one of us doesn't a have a clue as to what she is doing :)

When you right click my wireless network icon, you should get an option to "select wireless network" and from there is should seek and list the networks it sees and you can select from the list to connect.

When you toggle it with FN-F2 does it give any indication of the change???

it tells me that No wireless networks were found in range

Make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on. To see an updated list, click "refresh network list."

okay, when i refreshed the list, it tells me

ann Limited or no connectivity

security-enabled wireless network

This network requires a network key. You are currently connected to this network. To disconnect from this network, click Disconnect below.

Lets try this:

Click MY COMPUTER
MY NETWORK PLACES
VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS

and look for one called "Wireless connection" or some such

when i click on where it says Limited or No Connectivity, it says

You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

after it finishes trying to Repair, it tells me:

Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed:

Renewing your IP address

For assistance, contact the person who manages your network.

Now you begin to get into some foreign territory for me.

Sounds like they set this up with data encryption keys for the wireless, I dont run them on mine.

Have you talked to their tech support on this??? Something tells me its a very simple things once you know it.

There is a security setting in the router, sounds like it is shutting out any PC which doesnt have the setting, or a "key" which allows you to access the router. It sounds like you can SEE the network as far as wireless goes but you havent said "mother may I?" to get in, i.e. put in the key in the PC.

i haven't talked to anyone on it besides you and penguinfan :)

we just got back home this afternoon and i thought it was gonna be an easy thing to do....LOL

maybe that is why comcast told me when i got the laptops they would have to come and get them up and running.

so far i'm to the point of figuring out my *key* (password).. but i just can't manage to get the network to recognize the IP of the new puters :(

sounds like tomorrow will be spent online with comcast tech support (or should i try tech support for the eMachine?) i know that comcast will tell me that THEY have to do it just for the $$$.

I suspect its part of the comcast ploy. I suspect they have a standard process for their setup.

Lets try this:

Go to one of the existing systems on the wireless network, one that works through the router.

do this:

Click MY COMPUTER
MY NETWORK PLACES
VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS

and look for one called "Wireless connection" or some such

when you find it, right click it and ask for "properties"

click the Wireless Networks tab
See what are listed there, should just be one

click it then press "properties" and copy the contesnts of the three tabs there on paper.

then repeat it on the laptop and try putting those values in.

ok, i followed your post #54 instructions and didn't learn too darn much, but the one thing i DID figure out is the key to it all.... even tho i *thought* i had the *KEY* right since it accepted it and let me go further, i was NOT right.... i used the password that they set up for my e-mail which was 10 characters....

while following your instructions, i can see that the *key* only has EIGHT characters...funny thing is, they are all DOTS, and i don't know how to make them with the keyboard...LOL

can't wait to see if they will TELL me what the password is or if they say they have to do it for a fee...i will be SOOOOOO pissed if i have to pay them to come back here to type!!!!!
