On the course!
There is a gal I work with who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She was off of work for quite some time, and getting treatment.

Some of her closer friends "passed the hat" for her. They had brat fries, sold t-shirts with a catchy slogan, etc. People donated cash, too. One of the issues at hand, was that this woman did not have Income Continuation Insurance. This means she was not making any money while she was off. (This was the driving force for the fund raising events.) Also, people could donate their vacation time to her, as well.

Now, I'm not a hard ass, but when you are offered ICI when you start you job, it is a fairly minimal cost. There is no way that you can't come up with that few bucks a month, and it is sheer stupidity to not take it. (If she'd have smoked one less pack a week, she could have purchased the insurance.)

So, the people at work raise money, kick in their vacation time, etc. She is off for months, but eventually comes back to work. Well, what's the first thing I notice? (Besides the bald head from chemo) She's lighting up heaters every 20 minutes!

This absolutely floored me! Your co-workers go out of their way to help your dumb ass out, and you come back to work still smoking like a demon? WTF?????

I thought that was a huge slap in the face to anyone who gave her a dime. How the hell does a person like that even show their face?

Does smoking lead to Breast Cancer? I mean I agree with you actually but would agree a whole lot more if it was Lung Cancer.

gee, kinda hard to quit smoking when you're going through all that stress. No skin off your nose though, right? You didn't donate anything, did you, lol!!??

Your second point about having that income continuation insurance is interesting. I guess it's similar to the short term disability I am offered at my job, and I agree, it is silly not to carry it unless you are wealthy enough to be self-insured.

I dont think the point is if smoking causes breast cancer or not. The point is that she was given alot of money and was buying smokes with it. Sounds like she was really struggling. :jerkit:

I can see yyz's point about people donating to help with her recovery and now she is messing herself up with cigarettes, which could potentially give her another type of cancer. That would feel like a slap in the face to me too if I kicked in some $$ for her. If she has stress then why not go talk to a shrink or something?

njsf and lux have it right.

To the people who gave her money, it's kinda hard to swallow. I mean, you are trying to beat a cancer, and still working on getting another kind?

But the main issue is her not paying for the insurance. If she would have done that, she would have received a paycheck for those few months.

I'm sure that some of you won't have an issue with what she did/is doing, and that's ok. I just thought it was a very selfish thing for her to do.

The smoking coming back at work is a complete insult to those who gave money. What I don't understand is the amount of money she puts into cigs she could've set up short term, long term, and/or both when she started work. That's just peer stupidity!! That's like signing up to be a lifeguard without knowing how to swim. It just doesn't happen these days. I'm in complete shock about that situation...
