Nationals big

Nationals are seeking their sixth series' victory in their last seven.

Last night's extra inning victory marked Washington's third straight over the Phillies and eighth in their last nine overall. Frank Robinson's club is playing sound baseball as the Nats have now scored the victory in 16 of their last 22 games overall. A win today would move them within 2 1/2 games of second place Philadlephia in the NL East.

The Phillies, who are playing their 10th straight road affair after this past week's trek to the West Coast, look like a tired bunch right now. They're hitting just .237 in their last seven games and only .248 away from home this year.

Corey Lidle (4-5, 4.83) has been wild here of late (1.691 WHIP in his last three starts) and he's given up seven runs in his two starts against Washington this year.

The Nationals' Livan Hernandez has won four consecutive starts and is 10-7 with a 3.34 ERA in his career versus the Phils. He's not a world-beater, but he'll battle enough this afternoon at RFK as Washington keeps its hot roll going.

SAN FRANCISCO (Lowry) -135 over PITTSBURGH (Snell) huge

Considering how poorly the Pirates have played vs.
lefthanders in 2006 (5-16, -$1150, including a 1-11
mark on the road with only 3.1 runs per game), we're
surprised the line on this game is as low as it is. Noah
Lowry has returned to the rotation after a stint on the DL
and posted a solid 3.76 ERA in his seven starts. And
while SF does its best work vs. lefthanders, they've still
averaged 5.0 runs per game this year, and they are in
a competitive race in the NL West. Ian Snell has been
mediocre at best for the Bucs (5.26 ERA in 12 starts),
he won't get the benefit of much run support from his
offense, and will have a hard time keeping the Giants
in check. Lay the price on the favorite in this one.

BLIND BETTING WARNING!
JUNE 5, 2006 -- Baseball investors are guided by a general rule of thumb that you must wager on underdogs to make money in the long run. The danger of this loose 'rule' is that it can lead to blind betting for the sake of conforming.

Naturally, which underdogs are played will ultimately factor into whether or not a profit can be made. 2006 MLB Underdogs are winning at their 3-year average rate of 41.8%. However, a flat-bet on every one of them represents a four-figure net loss.

MLB UNDERDOGS
Year W L W/L % $100 Net

2006 300 417 41.8% -2,215

2005 961 1,312 42.3% 1,240

2004 941 1,343 41.2% -209

TOTAL 2,202 3,072 41.8% -1,184

The Internet wagering boom has generated a generation of blind bettors looking for instant satisfaction, taking underdogs for the sake of taking underdogs without regard for situational analysis. They drive underdog prices down. In 2004, the average MLB underdog price was +$146.80. This season, through May, the average MLB underdog price been +$140.10, which is further deflated from last season's average of +$142.00.

On the surface, a difference of +$6.80 less per game may not seem like much. But this 4.6% dip in price is HUGE. Forget about your imperceptible global warming. This climate change in baseball -- sudden underdog Ice Age -- should force everyone playing on it to focus more seriously on their handicapping and wagering strategies in order to survive!

Previously...
Our May 15 report forewarned about this trend. Since then, flat-betting MLB underdogs has lost nearly four times the May 15 amount!
MAY 15, 2006 -- Underdogs can be expected to win in the 40% range of all baseball games. Currently this season, the winning percentage for underdogs is slightly ahead of where it has finished in 2004 and 2005. However, they are showing a net loss, which means that the winning underdog prices have not been high enough to offset the 56.9% losses.

Year W L % Dog-O-Meter

2006 208 275 43.10% ($430)

2005 961 1312 42.30% $1,240

2004 941 1343 41.20% $231

TOTAL 2110 2930 41.90% $1,041

MAY 15, 2006 -- Yankee Stadium and the Texas Rangers' home park are the American League sites with the biggest numbers posted. But after more than one month of play, games at Cleveland's Jacobs Field have produced the largest margin against the total in all of baseball, going OVER by 2.53 runs per game.

Colorado's Coors Field, where there has been an attempt to improve the pitching results, is the site of MLB's highest posted totals by the sports books. However, in 2006, games played at Coors Field have yielded the widest UNDER margin to date -- lower than the posted total by nearly -2 runs per game! --
