Italian Stallions
Tuesday July 4, 2006
"You know, we're Italian. Soccer is life. It's all or nothing. If we lose today, it's going to be a funeral down here. If we win, it's going to be one hell of a party."
That's what one loyal Italian soccer fan had to say in the tense moments before Italy's dramatic semi-final game against Germany on Tuesday.
In the end, the funeral was called off, and the party was on.
Thousands of ecstatic fans turned Little Italy into a sea of green, white and red following Italy's 2-0 win over the host Germans. The last time Italy won the World Cup was 1982, and many of the fans taking to the streets recalled the win with fond memories, and hopes for 2006.
"There were about 100,000 people on St. Clair, and I would say that was probably the biggest gathering I ever seen," remembers one fan.
Italy is now set to face the winner of Wednesday's other semi-final between Portugal and France.
`If it's Italy and Portugal in the final (Sunday) ... the city will just erupt'
