OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar will not play for the Sooners this season following an investigation by the team, according to a television report.

Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking "payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked."

Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed.

"We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules," head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.

"Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations," Stoops said.

A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.

He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

"I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values," Stoops said in the statement.

I went to school there and the overwhelming majority of fans and alumni knew that Bomar was a thug from the moment he got there. Couple of drinking violations, and now this. The kid will end up at Tarleton State playing D3 ball. Worthless punk.

I think that the magnitude of this could have been bigger if they didn't have paul thompson on the team. Not that he is that great, but he did beat out Bomar last year for the starting QB role, followed by his losing that job after just one game

I think Bomar would have been pretty good this year and moving Thompson to QB (if thats what they do) scratches a name off of the wide receiver depth chart.

what really hurts is losing the offensive lineman. They were already relatively inexperienced on the O-Line and this guy was supposed to be a starter who had a little experience

I would say Oklahoma's title hopes took a blow, but they still do play an easy schedule. Only big roadblocks at oregon, texas (neutral), and Texas tech at home. They still have a very good defense and the top tailback in the country.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them have a very good year despite this. we'll see...

gonna be tougher for AP if teams stack the line to stop him.
they wont be afraid of the passing game.

I do not see that happening.

Joey Halzle is a sophmore JUCO transfer who will most likely take over under center. Not sure if this kid is ready for the big time but OU does not have much choice. In the spring he struggled against the OU defense and it is doubtful that he will be able to perform at Bomar's level any time soon.

True, everyone thought AP would dominate his sophomore season, but with no passing game and a relatively weak OL, it didnt take a football genius to figure out a scheme to stop one of the best RBs in the country.

i figure teams will do the same to UTexas and test out the frosh QB. Texas does have the luxury of a better OL and a solid WR corps plus a couple of good RBs to line up in the backfield to mix things up.

reports i hear are pretty sure Thompson will move to QB tomorrow as Halzle was horrid in the Spring....basically Stoops has no choice

up to 6 Sooners were working at a local car dealership....Bomar filed for 18K on his tax return as income and basically didn't do much other than show up to clock in and show up later to clock out

looks like only 2 are going down with the ship

need to take the crooked car dealer and put him in jail as its hard to fault any college kid for taking a job like that

Peterson would be out too if they really investigated his 6 month Lexus test drive.

I didnt expect this, but have been saying all alone that OU was being extremely overrated. But fact is Bomar sucked so it really isnt that huge a loss - except Thompson is actually much worse.

I am actually hearing there is more coming and it could get very ugly. Bomar has said to those close to him that he now intends to bring down the whole program.

Yeah Sun, I heard that there are six more players that may be out within the next week.

Three books that I know of have taken down total win wagering as of this evening.

Apparently their only kicker was employed at the dealership. Same one where Peterson test drove his car. The other 6 are all starters ....and Bomar's dad is reportedly already talking to NCAA trying to cut a deal where his kid can be eligible to play at another school......

You know, when your entire state is founded upon the principle of cheating things like this are gonna happen....

here is something that i picked up at the cnn/si site.....

With Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar having been dismissed, Paul Thompson could be returned to the position. Other candidates figure to be Joey Halzle, who threw for 2,077 yards in junior college last season, and freshman Sam Bradford, a prized recruit from Oklahoma City.

Yea right Sun. I do not remember an Oklahoma school getting the death penalty like a certain Texas school. Could you please explain how the state was founded on cheating. Thats just stupid but sounds like it would come from a texan. Players getting paid like that has been going on for ever and it happens at every campus. Some are just to stupid and bold and eventually get caught and OU boosters fit that to a tee.

Sun, your dreams of the Sooners destruction are laughable. They are not going to kick two more players off, then another. The two that broke the rules got caught and kicked out of the program. Paul Thompson taking over is not near as concerning as the depth in the oline. Your hatred for everything in Oklahoma I guess is justified with the ass beatings your team has taken the last several years at the hand of my Sooners. Answer this question for me. Where did Ramonce Taylor get the money for a Cadillac Escalade that he was toting 4lbs of weed in? You need to brace for a rough season for your whorns. Your depth at QB could be more alarming after the season gets started than OU's line.

Umm what is a Sooner Rick? By definition the state was founded upon the idea of cheating. It's called a joke. Perhaps you should try and lighten up just a smidge.

Of course Okie State has always been such an upstanding program I can understand the defensiveness.

As for you Sooner, I was ripping on Ramonce Taylor on here before people knew anything about him...but lets not do something silly like letting the facts get in the way when it is easier to just blindly bash someone. I am sure your next 17 posts will be enjoyable though.

As for Paul Thompson ...one start v TCU and a home loss. I would say that is a concern. I also posted long ago about the OLine during ther sooner lovefest that the whole pre-season has been. This isnt exactly news.
