CARDS
It's Game 3 tonight from Busch Stadium and this is not a huge price to be laying with Chris Carpenter, who has been dominant at home this season. He'll be the star of this game as he'll pitch lights out in shutting down this Tiger offense that has scored just four runs in the first games of the series. Detroit is batting 1-for-9 (.218) with runners in scoring position and three starters - Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco and Pudge Rodriguez - have combined for just a lone hit. Detroit, which won't have the benefit of the DH tonight, won't score much (if any) tonight against Carpenter.
Carpenter is 9-4 with a solid 1.85 ERA in 16 home starts this season. In his lone home playoff start this October, he held San Diego to two runs in seven innings in the Cards' NLDS clinching win. The Cards are 13-5 when Carpenter toes the rubber at home and they're set to notch another victory tonight. I expect Carpenter to be extra focused as he was roughed up by the Tigers at Comercia several months ago. That was a lifetime ago during the hots days of summer when St. Louis was struggling. It will be chilly in St. Louis tonight and Carpenter will keep these Tiger bats cold.
Detroit's Nate Robertson went 7-6 with a nice 3.71 REA on the road this year. But the Tigers were just 7-10 in his road outings and he was roughed up pretty badly (seven runs, 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings) in his ALDS Game 1 start at New York. He bounced back to throw five scoreless innings at Oakland in Game 1 of the ALCS, but this will be a tougher environment (more akin to what he faced at Yankee Stadium) tonight and a bigger stage. St. Louis beat two lefty starters incklduing Tom Glavine in the NLCS and Jim Edmonds is a career .333 postseason hitter against lefties. He, Albert Pujols and the rest of the Redbird lineup will give the St. Louis faithful plenty to cheer about. After splitting two games at Comercia Park, the Cards are feeling good about their chances in this series and Carpenter will see to it that they win Game
