Upstairs watching sports on the big TV.
Just in time for election season,,,,does anybody really believe them anymore?

BAGHDAD ? Iraqi forces should be able to take full control of the nation's security within a year and a half with minimal American support, the top U.S. military and diplomatic officials in the nation said today.
"It's going to take another 12 to 18 months or so until I believe the Iraqi security forces are completely capable of taking over responsibility for their own security ? still probably with some level of support from us, but that will be asked for by the Iraqis." Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said at a Tuesday news conference in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.

Would put it to election stratagy also--don't think they know anything today they weren't aware of 2 months ago.
The only thing that will make diff is Iraq'i attitude from here on out--we took country in weeks--got rid of Saddam & Sons--gave them control of their own country via democracy--what will follow will be mostly on their shoulders.
If I had my druthers would like to see them further fortify greens zone and shore up area on Irans borders--put troops in support of Kurds who have helped themselves and let the iraqi's concentrate on trouble areas and if they want to kill eack other off--so be it. Would make one last offensive against Sadr's crew including him then pull back for air support only--let them run the patrols and take the hits from the IUD's.

Out of curiousity Chad what do you think Clinton would have done that he didn't do when trade was attacked in 93?

DTB, you acknowledge that this is a political statement. Do you feel it's wrong for them to say this? Does it go against your basic policy/strategy?

Gives them enough time to keep on stealing. Just build things for a penny on the dollar watch it get blown up then build it again. Got to love these guys. They know, i mean they know how to steal the tax payers money

Smurph I'm saying I regard it as politically timed and would totally disregard it in weighing my vote.

Don't pay much attention to last minute claims by either party--prefer to look at a politicians long term voting record and compare it to my liking or disliking.View very of these last week ads and flame throwing from either party and find them for most part an insult to ones intelligence.

DTB pray for the dem's to win the house. It will be better for you and all of us. GRID LOCK. Thank God if it happens. Maybe even a tax break more for you and me. And anything the congress and senate come up with Bush does not like. VETO

Would have no objection to things tightening in House DJV --and senate either if not for fact it would make peloski speaker of the house.

I have no doubt if every voter knew the powers that go with speaker of house and Peloski's voting record and agendas-the gop would prob gain seats there--but unfortunately on one poll from memory--38% of americans do not know who peloski is.

Would venture a guess- more know about Mass Barney Franks and Ted Kenndy than Peloski and Hassert combined.

and speaking of Mass found something else about your great state last night.

Is one of a handful of states that allows criminals to write books about their crimes and profit from it.

And just what does that have to do with anything?

I always speak kindly of Kentucky. Kentucky Woman by Neil Diamond is a great song.

Now, you want to explain what your last post has to do with the thread?

Rumsfeld tells war critics to 'back off' By PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writer
48 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday that critics should "just back off" on demands for deadlines in Iraq and that it is difficult to predict when Iraqis will resume control of their country.

At a Pentagon news conference, Rumsfeld said benchmarks for security, political and economic progress that U.S. and Iraqi officials have been discussing are valuable because "you are in effect establishing priorities."

But he said the timelines have no specific deadlines, or consequences if goals are not met by specific dates.

"You're looking for some sort of a guillotine to come falling down if some date isn't met. That is not what this is about," Rumsfeld told reporters.

"They've been discussing the way forward through the rest of this year and next year," Rumsfeld said of discussions between U.S. and Iraqi officials. "As they do that, they then discuss, `Well, when might something happen?' And it isn't a date. And it isn't a penalty if it doesn't" happen.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad announced in Baghdad on Tuesday that Iraqi leaders had agreed that by the end of the year, they will have a plan that roughly lays out the times by which they want certain things accomplished.

His announcement came two weeks before elections for control of Congress in which President Bush's stewardship of the increasingly unpopular war in Iraq has become a top issue.

On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minster Nouri al-Maliki rejected Khalilzad's announcement and said his government had not agreed to anything.

Later Wednesday, Bush said al-Maliki was correct in saying mandates could not be imposed on Iraq. He added, "We'll push him, but we're not going to push him to the point where he can't achieve the objective."

Bush also said Iraq's government would have to understand the United States would not have unlimited patience.

"You ought to just back off, take a look at it, relax, understand that it's complicated, it's difficult," Rumsfeld said regarding deadlines. "Honorable people are working on these things together. There isn't any daylight between them."

Rumsfeld also said the U.S. is considering whether it should speed up money planned for recruiting, training and equipping Iraqi security forces. Officials have said training Iraqis to take over security is key to withdrawing U.S. and other coalition forces.

"We intend to increase their budgets" as well as their capabilities, Rumsfeld said, and officials will help make the improvements more quickly. He did not cite any figures, however. His press secretary, Eric Ruff, said a review of their needs is under way.

Not to worry Bush is still there to veto what ever.
And there's not enough vote either side to over ride. At least the rubber stamping would be over.
