Report: Benoit deaths were murder-suicide
Associated Press, Updated 58 minutes ago STORY TOOLS:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."
"We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at," said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said test results may not be back for weeks.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities were investigating the deaths at a secluded Fayette County home as a murder-suicide and were not seeking any suspects. The official who described the manner of death spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information was to be released at a news conference later Tuesday.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said authorities asked that it not release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment

Why does Pro Wrestling even exist? It's nothing more actors on way too many steroids running around in their underwear, PRETENDING to beat each other up.

Candice Michelle(go daddy.com), Torry Wilson, and Stacey Keibler are three good reasons why it exist.

OK, I guess I can see how it happens.

My question for fans of pro wrestling is why are they interested in a "sport" with a pre-determined outcome? The matches and champions are contrived, so what's the point?

Smurph it is the same reason woman watch soap opera's. Its a man's giant soap opera with story lines and plots. Most movies are not real either but people go to see them. There also is a segment that believes its real.
A buddy of mine once called me asking if i was watching wrestling. I said no why and he said he couldn't believe his eyes. The WWE had this big huge black guy with African war paint all over him. He didn't speak any English. He just howled. His name was Kamala. This wrestler was just huge and was supposed to be some kind of animal they found in the jungle i guess. Well, he didn't know the rules all that well, and would belly flop a guy when the guy was laying on his stomach. Then he would pin him but forgetting to roll him on his back, to get his shoulders down for the count. Well, the first five rows in the audience would jump to there feet trying to get Kamala's attention to roll the guy over. There was nothing fake about those first five rows. Every time this was on the same five rows fell for the same thing. They did get the big African to flip the guy over tho, so not all was lost. If they didn't get up and scream at the big African he might still be in the ring on top of that guy.

I wonder if Oj would have killed himself ESPN would have glorified his life for the triple murder like WWE did for Benoit. Rumor has it the WWE knew about the cause of death and still went ahead and did something this despicable. They said they scaled it back a lot. Not sure how they could have because he was in every match and every interview was about him. 3 people dead and he is the cause of all of it and his is portrayed a great guy last night. There is also a fact that she had a restraining order on him a few years back and had it lifted. Also, it was common knowledge about his abusing his wife who was a bit shady herself.

The thing that could really blow some trouble into the McMahon empire was a report that he knew about the murder-suicide, and still went ahead with the tribute show. A local radio (former football player) jock said this AM that according to another local wrestler, Benoit was entirely too serious about everything, all the time - he was too physical, actually punishing people in the ring, people hated to draw him in a match. Also, he mentioned that the storyline of the wife messing around with other wrestlers became a reality, and there was real family trouble over the past few years.

Suffocating a 7 year old son? That is some serious mental insufficiency there - or plain roid rage. Either way, if wrestlers continue to flame out and die like this (and take family with them), I'd think somebody in the law or legislature will make things tough for McMahon.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. _ Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with the pulley of a weightlifting machine, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators found prescription anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man was unhinged by the drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."

Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's motive or state of mind. No suicide note was found.

"I'm baffled about why anybody would kill a 7-year-old," District Attorney Scott Ballard said. "I don't think we'll ever be able wrap our head around that."

Benoit, a Montreal native whose nickname was "The Canadian Crippler," was one of the stars of the WWE wrestling circuit and was known for his wholesome family man image. His wife, Nancy, was a wrestling stage manager who worked under the name "Woman." They met and fell in love when their wrestling story lines intertwined.

When he won the world heavyweight championship, Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) hoisted the belt over his head and invited his wife and child into the ring to celebrate.

Nevertheless, Nancy Benoit filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment."

She later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In his response, Benoit sought joint custody.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three rooms of the house, off a gravel road.

Benoit's wife, 43, was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle, Ballard said.

The son, Daniel, was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, Ballard said.

Benoit, 40, apparently killed himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the WWE wrestling star spread out the killings over a weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies.

typical media bullshit. This poor guy Jerry Lawlers son gets interviewed and says something they are blowing way out of context and these pricks know it because he corrected them in the next segment. They are using the sound bite like he was saying he would feel fortunate to live untill 45 when he never meant that. He meant to wrestle at 45.

Wrestler and Wife Argued Over Child Care
By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press Writer
2 hours ago

In this March 29, 2004 file photo, provided by ...
ATLANTA - In the days before pro wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and child and hanged himself, the couple argued over whether he should stay home more to take care of their mentally retarded 7-year-old son, an attorney for the wrestling league said Wednesday.

"I think it's fair to say that the subject of caring for that child was part of what made their relationship complicated and difficult, and it's something they were both constantly struggling with," said Jerry McDevitt, an attorney for World Wrestling Entertainment. "We do know it was a source of stress and consternation."

McDevitt said the wrestling organization learned from the couple's friends and relatives that the Benoits were struggling with where to send the boy to school since he had recently finished kindergarten.

He also said Benoit's wife didn't want him to quit wrestling, but she "wanted him to be at home more to care for the kid. She'd say she can't take care of him by himself when he was on the road."

The child suffered from a rare medical condition called Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation often accompanied by autism, McDevitt said.

Over the past weekend, authorities said, Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine cable in the couple's suburban home. No motive was offered for the killings, which were discovered Monday.
