Born in Moline.....now live in Rockford, but home enough to catch the Times blurbs there redsfan. I'm going just as nuts as you HAVE to be.

Who in hell can we vote for??

Ole Hill? Insider. Hypocrite. Hardly inspirational.

Edwards? Flip-Flopping, pandering trial lawayer.

Obama? Civil-rights idealogue...at least not an obvious insider and optimistic, questionable qualification.

Guiliani? NOT qualified, possibly dangerous.

Thompson? Please, not another B-list actor who can't present a single meaningful answer to a simple question.

McCain? Hopeful, but too old, too much cow-towing to the evangelicals, and hung himself on Iraq already.

Huckabee? Complete sky-pilot.

Romney? Head further into clouds than Huckabee, plus a flip-flopper.

Gore? Ripe for the taking, but could dangerously divide Democratic party, which already seems to suffer fron lack of ability to grab ass with either, much less both hands

Bloomberg? Double-edge sword, but something attractive about someone so filthy rich that he can govern without being led around by the nose by special-interest lobby, as if that mattered with the 2nd grade class that is our legislative branch.

Ron Paul looks better everyday. Not to say I agree with his platform line by line; And, having nothing to lose makes it easy to keep message straight, but isn't everyone's wet dream a grass-roots revolution leading to an overhaul of the way we do business?

The whole process is leading to waves of nausea in conflict with a strong urge to drink lots. Thank goodness for ballgames, or I would have to take every anti-depressant on the market.

PS KOD......which end did Brittany shave today???

you guys crack me up....

you list that rudy is not qualified, but not the others.....he's probably one of the most qualified & sharpest candidates that is runnning....also tell me why you think he is dangerous...

Couldn't get fire and police on the same page in his city.....raises a question about unnecessary deaths at WTC. Possibly more related to clean-up w/o proper safety equpment available. One of the most toxic clean-up sites imaginable, directly correlated w/ an increase in some nasty respiratory ailments acutely in the municipal workers involved, and likely more serious complications there-of down the road.

Cashed in BIG on his "America's Mayor" hero image making six-figure inspirational speeches (after he tried to change election law delaying his successor's inauguration) swelling his coffers to the point where a run at the White House became feasible. Hard to find anyone who profited more from this event, in fact.

Keeping the the Swift-Boat politics flame alive. Want out of Iraq? You don't support the troops and are a traitor. His strength is appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Asks Paul to take a comment that we may have brought the attack onto ourselves due to our geopolitical meddling, citing "I have never heard that before...", even though it was said by Osama himself. Paul has been in the legislature for 17 years combined over 2 stints and just so happens to serve on Foreign Affairs, so what would he know about that particular topic?

Dangerous b/c his coffers contain MAJOR contributions from, for example, Chevron, tobacco corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Saudis, Rupert Murdoch, one cocaine smuggler for sure, to name a few.

His whole rep is tied to 9/11 and taking down the NYC mob bosses. Where do I suddenly get the impression he will have a handle on health care, the environment, the economy. How the hell can I feel confident he will have a deft enough touch to grasp the diplomatic nuances required to guide us through the next 4-8 yrs, critical years for the future direction of our nation, after seeming as if his leadership skills amount to being a freaking bully.

NOT qualified.

good post....

some of what you posted i knew already.....but nothing really changes my opinion of voting for him at this point because imo his pluses outweigh his minuses...& some of what you say could be said about some of the others.....& i agree there isn't anybody to get excited about.

i guess we'll see how it plays out....

He just scares me as an extension of the current administration. He is clearly who the party wants to run. We'll see if his stump ends up as something with more substance than "I'm the only one who can beat Hillary."

I don't like the idea of Edwards, but that might be because he was a med-mal lawyer with a a propensity for blaming birth-defects on OB-Gyne MDs.

They're all going to get a a good hard look from me over the next 4 months. However, since I live in Illinois, my electoral votes are going to be Democrat whether I like it or not.

I sure am half-empty today:shrug:

i'm not so sure that rudy is what the republican machine wants because of his stance on social issues & gun control. i would think that thompson, huckabee (gaining a little momentum), or romney is more what the republicans would want.

to my way of thinking the dems have a very weak field with clinton being my #1 choice...but i would never vote for her.

btw....in my lifetime, there has never been a presidential candidate who has excited me.....

I thought you were a local or close to it, escarzamd. Spent more than a few dollars and killed a few brain cells chasing tail at the old Wells Fargo bar back in the mid to late 80s...:D

Another thing that just wears me out about the whole thing is the phone calls. I'm a registered Democrat, so all the campaigns got a hold of my # and they call what seems like daily to tell me Biden will be here and Obama wil be there etc etc..the other day I was heading downtown via Brady St(edit..now that wouldn't be too cool, would it?)er, I mean, Harrison St-- and there was a caravan with several police cars making sure no one could get within a couple of car lengths of them--one guess as to who that was. Yep, Ol' Hill herself--being an ex- first lady, she gets 24 hr secret service protection wherever she goes...I called the auditors office the other day to have my number removed from my voters registration info--I've heard the campaigns get new lists every 2 weeks or so--hopefully that means the calls will stop soon.
When I was younger and still thought who was President matters(I was SO naive) I thought it was cool that I could go and see the candidate and even shake their hand if I wanted--I met Biden and the other Dems that were running in '87-'88 while a student at the U of Iowa--now it just makes me want to toss something thru the screen when the local news covers them tromping around town.
If the caucus were tomorrow, I'd 1) not attend, or 2) go and caucus for none of the above. I am really trying to like Obama enough to support him, but every time he is in town, he is proposing another governmental program that he will pay for via--well, they never quite get around to telling us how they will do that, do they?
Oh, and Ron Paul. My buddy is a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party and he likes Paul's message, but he thinks the messenger is a bit loony tunes....

Yeah....I get the GOP stuff w/o being registered. They clearly have access to IRS records there.

I remember '88.....I was a sophmore in IC (remember 10cent draws on Thurs @ dooley's and College St?) and met Gore, Biden, et al and got all pumped up and when Spring practice came around (could still get kegs/botas into Kinnick then).......POOF, nobody gave two sh!ts about fly-over country anymore. I find it amazing how much pull Grassley still has, and how moderate he's become (that's actually encouraging);probably just seems moderate compared to just how far to the right the sky-pilots (no abortion ferchrissakes!!!......but once yer born, yer on yer own!) have taken the party.

Hey AR....what do you make of the Robertson endorsement.....seems the evangelicals were Rudy's only hurdle since he toes the line on the current GOP platform otherwise. Rallying the "base" or a saw to grind? Seems fishy, but what doesn't in the politics section?

it doesn't make much sense to me since there are 3 or 4 other candidates that seem to be better aligned with robertson's position than rudy. either rudy "sold his soul" for the backing or robertson is getting back at somebody else for not doing what old pat wanted.

Do I remember 10 cent draws @ Dooley's/College St/Tycoon IC? Nope. Drank too many of them then.....:mj07: I took an extra semester an graduated in Dec '87, then went back in 90-91 and got my Masters..both in Poli Sci...

My high school girlfriend's brother bought Dooley's(what a dump..made Gabe's look like a palace..:D) and turned it into One Eyed Jakes..bought at just the right time...they grand fathered in his liquor license--thats why there are no other 2nd floor bars in downtown IC.
And Spring games were great then--until those morons tossed their empty pony keg over the top of Kinnick and there went the kegs...remember tailgating right across from Kinnick? Where the Pomerantz center sits now? Damn, those were some great times to be in Iowa City, eh?
.you make it to any games now? I've had season tix since '94...going tomorrow, but might skip next week...

I know that guy who made it "One Eyed Trouser Jakes." Spent alot of time everywhere....worked at the Vine from '88-'91.......before they made it a "Perkin's"

Tall, goofy, blonde dude......from PV maybe (not you)? Played alot of pool up in that corner.

No games this year. Kinda hold out for the biggies, and there were none this season.

:mj22: .....sorry

Yes, sorry we hijacked this thread....

Mike Porter is his name..he still owns one or two bars in town..yeah, 6 foot 7 or so.. a bit goofy...actually from Davenport... we all went to West High school...His sister was a real pistol...glad she was a year younger than me and went to Iowa State for school...I liked to slum when I was in IC...Deadwood, Gabe's(must have seen 300 shows there over the years), George's(best cheeseburgers in town)....Lived in IC until '98...worked at the U of I...returned to Davenport when my wife got a job here...hated it at 1st..now lots of brewpubs, ethnic restaurants, etc etc....and I still know half of Iowa City it seems so I spend a lot of time there as well....

Deadwood had by far the best jukebox in town. Gabe's was the location of a seminal event in my life........first few grams of psilocybin at a "House of Large Sizes" show.

I'm having flashbacks!!:scared

small world, indeed. I'm quite sure I either sold you those 'shrooms myself or the person you got them from got them from me...:mj07:

"House of Large Sizes" were great. had some high school buddies that went to UNI and I saw them at their gabe's as well as seeing them a few times in IC. Saw R.E.M at Hancher in early '85...at that time the only ones that had heard of them were all the hipsters at the college radio stations around the country...

Cie,

It's pretty hard to make a case for old Hill. But her opponent is going to be Crazy Rudi. Is that who you want carrying a nuclear suitcase around. And you mentioned "any of the dems". Could there be a worse presidency than the last 8 years with the the buffoon we currently have. Since we're on a gambling site, isn't it nice to know that this administration made it a priority to make sure Joe Six Pack couldn't blow his dough on off shore web sites while we are fightin the war on terrorism. And you mentioned taxing the rich. How do I get back the $500 billion we spent removing WMD from Iraq. Let me make a suggestion, who about a 3rd party candidate.

I agree with you. Hill is horrible, and until recently I thought I would vote for HIll over Rudy. Not anymore, as I can easily see the CLinton machine hanging in there for 2 terms if she gets in next year. I am in my prime earning years, and cannot afford to give up any more of my paycheck to pay for entitlement government programs.

Here's why I wont be voting for Ole Hill.

If she wins, do you realize we'll have had 24 years (28 if re-elected) of either a Bush or Clinton presidency :scared

Gee, no wonder our country is so divided and its impossible to get practical solutions to help everyday people.....for somebody like me who is as much anti-bush as i am anti-clinton, its a sad era of our history. We have become what out Fore Fathers feared, a country ruled by a few--entrenched political machines keeping the same old, same old in power--at the expense of many.

I thought America was supposed to be above these sorts of dynasties  But, the media is as much at fault. Anytime a candidate with out of the box ideas or offers solutions that buck "conventional wisdow" they get pilloried by the media, as I am sure supporters of Ron Paul, Edwards, and even Howard Dean from '04 would attest to.

This sounds totally off the wall, and I'll probably get crushed for it, but i really wouldn't mind decisions being made by, say, a Ron Paul and Barak Obama coalition. Or something akin to that.

Now, back to college football :weed:

:

:mj07: :mj07: Yeah, like Iraq. Heaven forbid some money stays in the US and helps an American or 2. Please do not fall for the scare tactics. Perhaps you are not aware how much more of your money has been flowing less directly into corporate entitlement with Bush than would ever go to poor fellow Americans with Clinton.
