10 things you might not know about Obama

1. He is left-handed, a trait his boyhood schoolmates in Indonesia found curious. In their culture, children were expected to write with their right hand.

2. Raised by nonreligious parents, he became a Christian as an adult and joined Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago in 1988.

3. At the suggestion of his wife, he quit smoking before beginning this presidential campaign.

4. He was one of three black students at his high school, Punahou Academy, in Hawaii.

5. He is descended from slaveowners on his mother's side; as far as it can be determined, none of Obama's ancestors was a slave.

6. He won a Grammy in 2006 for Best Spoken Word for the CD version of his autobiography, "Dreams From My Father."

7. He taught constitutional law part time at the University of Chicago for several years before being elected to the U.S. Senate
in 2004.

8. If he weren't a politician, he'd like to be an architect.

9. Favorite movies: "The Godfather" (Parts I and II) and "Lawrence of Arabia."

10. He has described his family as so diverse that their reunions are like "a mini-U.N."

Obama on the issues

IRAQ

... has said the goal of increasing troop strength so Iraq's leaders can establish a stable government has failed. Would remove all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq within 16 months of taking office, except some to protect our embassy and diplomats.

... calls for the U.S. to loosen some restrictions on Cuba to encourage it to move toward democracy.

... would create a tax credit of $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family, for up to 150 million workers; and simplify IRS tax filings for millions of Americans.

... favors relaxing restrictions on federal financing.

GAY MARRIAGE

... opposes a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, supports civil unions.

ECONOMIC STIMULUS

... would index minimum wage to inflation; invest in job creation, training and manufacturing.

... would make a national health insurance plan available to all Americans and a National Health Insurance Exchange as a watchdog group for all private insurance plans, ensuring fairness and affordability.

SOCIAL SECURITY

... is opposed to privatization and would work with Congress on a payroll tax reform package to keep Social Security solvent.

ON THE COST OF WAR

"I will spare no expense to ensure our troops have the equipment and support they need ... But we also have

to understand that the more than $10 billion we're

spending each month in Iraq is money we could be investing here at home."

ON ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY

"If we unite this country around a common purpose, if we act on the responsibilities that we have to each other and to our country, then we can launch a new era of opportunity and prosperity."

IMMIGRATION

... would improve security at borders; supports legalization for undocumented workers after they pay a fine and learn English; and favors a guest worker program. Supports giving legal status to immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, who finish two years of college or military service.

ABORTION

... has consistently defended a woman's right to choose.

DEATH PENALTY

... supports the death penalty in cases "so heinous the community is justified in expressing the full measure of its outrage."

HOMELAND SECURITY

... would improve security for chemical plants, keep better track of spent nuclear fuel and upgrade security for public drinking water systems.

GLOBAL WARMING

... would reduce carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050, invest in clean energy technologies, reduce America's foreign oil consumption and address climate and environmental issues with the United Nations.

GUN CONTROL

... favors measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners while keeping guns away from children and criminals.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE

... supports public financing of campaigns combined with free television and radio time to reduce the influence of special interests.

EDUCATION

... would reform No Child Left Behind, expand Head Start programs and make math and science education a national priority.

TRADE

... would fight for a policy that opens up foreign markets to support American jobs, amend the North American Free Trade Agreement to favor American workers.

McCain Criticized for Slur (from 2000, Macaca II in the making?)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 18, 2000 | C.W. Nevius

Arizona Sen. John McCain refused to apologize yesterday for his use of a racial slur to condemn the North Vietnamese prison guards who tortured and held him captive during the war. "I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent five years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp, was questioned about the language because of a story last month in the Nation magazine reporting his continued use of the slur.

Since then, reports of McCain's language have been circulating on Internet chat sites and e-mails among Asian Americans, many of whom find the the term offensive and inappropriate for an elected official.

McCain's appeal to voters has been as a wartime hero and a feisty politician who speaks his mind and damns the consequences. But his comments on the eve of the key South Carolina primary show the candidate's vaunted "straight talk" in another light.

"The use of a racist slur can't be acceptable for any national leader, regardless of his background," said Diane Chin, executive director of the San Francisco-based Chinese for Affirmative Action. "For someone running for president not to recognize the power of words is a problem."

While McCain's words may have little effect in conservative South Carolina, where few Asian Americans live, they could come back to haunt him in other states.

"Historically, straight talkers who say things off the top of their heads eventually hang themselves with those sorts of remarks," said Bruce Cain, a political scientist at the University of California at Berkeley.

"While it might not hurt him now, Democrats are not going to have any hesitation about using this stuff to string him up later."

Earl Hopper had spent 30 years with the Army in Airborne Special services and with Army Intelligence and was a founding member of the National League of Families dedicated to retuning living POWs and MIAs of the Vietnam War.

The impression that McCain and the media has attempted to portray of McCain?s 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam is about as far from the truth that one could possible go. McCain, from the first moments of his capture, had behaved as a COLLOBORATOR and propaganda tool for his North Vietnamese captors. McCain had engaged in no less than 30, and likely as many as 38 anti-American propaganda broadcasts for Radio Hanoi during the period of his captivity. Far from the image of a dedicated American ?hero? sweating it out in a North Vietnamese prisoner?s ?hotbox? for 5 1/2 years, McCain was often given ?special? treatment by his captors, who were fully aware of his father?s and grandfather?s 4 star admiral positions with the Navy. No one has ever witnessed McCain?s supposed ?torture? at the hands of his jailers. The consensus opinion of other POWs in McCain?s camps was that McCain was NEVER tortured by the North Vietnamese. McCain?s disgraceful and wholly reprehensible conduct (along with John Kerry) during the 1991-93 Senate Committee on POW/MIAs leaves no doubt that McCain is a traitor to this country and its veterans and especially to the families of POWs and MIAs. ..Ken Adachi].

Polls: Obama extending lead over McCain
Posted: 11:00 AM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

Obama us ahead in the latest CNN poll of polls.
(CNN) ? Barack Obama is continuing to extend his lead over John McCain in a head-to-head matchup nationwide, a new CNN poll of polls indicates.

Check out the latest polls in the CNN Election Center

The Illinois senator now holds a 5 point lead over McCain among registered voters, 48 percent to 43 percent. In a CNN poll of polls conducted earlier this week, Obama's lead stood at 4 points, and in an average of national polls shortly before Hillary Clinton dropped out of the presidential race, Obama only held a 3 point lead over the Arizona senator.

The poll of polls consists of three recent surveys by Gallup, NBC/Wall Street Journal, and CNN/Opinion Research Corporation. The CNN poll was conducted entirely before Clinton formally gave up her White House bid on Saturday

I know , its good that he is ahead though.

I do not think a red alert would even help
McCain.

Americans are just sick of war.

Even Bush is apologizing he shouldnt have made the dead or alive comment and other war moves he made.

Yeh no shit George . But its a little late for that.

Just keep hugging and campaigning for your buddy John and everything will be ok in 2009.

When Obama is inaugarated.

He needs to be up by 30 percent right now and he isn't. When the race card comes out it will knock off 25 percent right from the top. Terror alerts, 527's, dopes falling for it, meet president McCain.

Looking at the electoral map, I am predicting McCain 286 - Obama 252.
