Hello I have always enjoyed reading the post in this forum and wanted to ask a couple questions to the people out there who have been doing this for a while.

Do you think it is possible to wager on sports and consistently earn a small profit every month?

Who out there is making at least $1,000-$2,000 per month doing this?

What are you doing to make sure you see a constant profit of at least this amount?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Yes - I think that's what they call being the bookie.

Where it is real F ing COLD
I have only been to this site for about 3 months and I have made some good bank. Don't know if it will last? What I have been doing is handicapping my own games and making a list. I follow several services that I believe are good, if they match then I make a decent wager.. If they go against me I avoid the game all together and if I see no one has an opinion I play it small.. The key has been being very selective and playing a minimal amount of games, but like I said it will be interesting to see how the football season goes.

I think statistics dictates that some people will profit.

If each bet is more or less a 50-50 chance, even with a 10% commission to the bookies, SOMEONE is going to nail 95 out of 100 bets one basketball season.

Imagine it like a bell curve, but with the top of the curve sitting at losing 10%, instead of breaking even. Even with the curve starting at -10%, there is still bound to be people who make a steady profit.

The folly is that most people don't realize that it is due to what amounts to statistical luck, and extremely rare cases some skill. Everyone thinks they can be in that rare profit group.

Thanks for the responses so far. I have been wagering for only 5 years and can honestly say only one baseball season was a winner and it was because I hit two 20K parlays. I can't seem to be able to just make one play a day, and when I don't do parlays and I straight be the 3-4 games I like it seems like most of them lose and the losses if I have favorites wipe out a lot of my bankroll. Maybe I will take a crack at just betting small and using better money management. I mean I think I can make $100 per day avg if I can control myself, which is the real problem. Just trying to be honest, I am sure there are some others that can't seem to keep the bets down to a minimum as well, in fact I used to hang out with a whole bunch of them.

Even if you take in 100.00 a day how long do you think the books would let it go on before they cut you off? You'd have to keep going to new books because you'd keep getting booted for being "too good":0corn

I began trying to win $10/day. That didn't work, so I started chasing and eventually trying to win $25/day, then $50/day, then $100/day. I found myself spiralling out of control. I believe the key is to bet a few games, not all games, and do not try and chase to catch up or get even. I eventually did win all my money back + a lot, and then spent most of it paying off my car, student loans, and an engagement ring. It was a good thing I paid my debts, because what I didn't spend, I proceeded to lose most of it back gambling. Quit cold turkey during NFL playoffs this past season after the NYG/DAL playoff game.
In my 3+ years, I found that tennis was pretty profitable. I only bet the major tournaments, and bet heavy favorites during round 3-semifinal rounds. Favorites usually pay -400 to -500, but they are pretty solid. My biggest money maker every year was the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. In 2007, the favorites were something like 28-4 ATS in the first round; and this past season, they were around 22-10 I believe.

Yes. I guarentee if you bet with the house, every time, you will be up at the end of each month. Find a VERY RELIABLE source and fade the public . Pretty simple, Vegas lines are set for 50/50 action, but trust me, they're not building those hotels on the juice alone. Only problem is that you would have to bet on just about EVERY contest, and it really depends on your bankroll.

Or you could do it the old fashion way...Do your homework and pick your spots. If you really want to make a living handicaping, you have to put in the TIME and learn to "read between the lines"

Definetely possible to make profits year after year....I use statistical based handicapping...not to brag, but I have not had a losing season in NFL , college foots or college basketabll, since I have been doing this. Has been at least 7 years.

Baseball is another story, can't beat it.....but bet very small and the units lost is small......can't find the right stats for baseball, haven't given up though, keep trying to tweak

I agree with topspinner here. I'm currently in my 4th year of full time 'capping. Other than investments, I have no other source of income....(well, except for the money I win on the golf course from my neighbors.:mj07: ). I only bet NFL, CFB, CBB and MLB. It's very rare, but on occasion, I'll dabble in other events.....usually if I get a reliable tip or I have substantial insight.

This life is NOT easy. I spend no less than 6 hrs per day capping. During some parts of some seasons (like interleague MLB) it takes even longer. I have developed spreadsheets that take alot of the "humdrum" work out of it, but when interleague comes around it's time comsuming to modify the formulas.

If you're not in a position to spend a considerable amount of time at it, then simply play "small" and treat it as a hobby.....not a vocation.

If you can devote the time necessary then you CAN beat almost any sport. There are no secrets, but if I may, I can suggest a couple of items that will help you along.

MONEY MANAGEMENT is probably the most kicked around term, but it is also the single most important factor in long term success. Read as much as you can on the subject and utilize it.

It's imperative you have several "outs". I make between 2-10% by checking lines every day.

Keep impecable records and analyze them periodicaly. How often is up to you, but DO IT!!

Now, a word of caution. You will only make money 'capping sports if you can get an edge. You can get an edge by having "inside information", (that is information not available to the general public) or information that is considered "breaking news". You'll have to act fast on news of this sort.
Secondly, if you don't have access to that type of information, then you'll have to demonstrate Superior use of existing information.

You probably don't have a bet, when the reason you like a team is based upon information that is available and easily understood by all bettors.

Never stop learning. Read everything you can get your hands on about betting.

Good Luck on your action.....

Thanks everyone.

topspinner I am going to be looking for your selections this season in NFL, hope you post.

ScreaminPain - appreciate the tips.

mjalam - Your right about hot streaks, and cold streaks for that matter. I always used to bet against the streak and lost a couple small fortunes that way.

Mully - I used to be able to look online and see what my old bookies per head players were on, you are right that guy always had one or two games that he cleaned up on where everyone was on one side.

marcb - Glad you were able to pay off some bills before you blew the rest of the winnings.

Everyone else I didn't get to thanks for responding, I think I am going to chill for a while and think about maybe doing something with NFL, I just get to crazy with all the baseball games every night. Good luck guys....
