Saturday's best NHL bets

Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins (-135, 5)

Something is brewing in Boston.

The team learned Friday it would be without left wing Milan Lucic for up to four weeks with an ankle injury. Lucic missed much of the first quarter of the season with a broken finger. The team rallied for a 2-1 win over New Jersey without him Friday, but his replacement, Vladimir Sobotka, was minus-1 in limited action.

The Bruins were 5-5-4 without him in the lineup, but were 4-0 in his four games back before his latest injury. In those four games, Lucic scored both of his goals this season.

Lucic?s injury also is a huge blow to the team?s offense, as the Bruins have scored a pathetic 60 goals so far this season. Good luck against Ottawa?s defense, which has allowed only 66 goals this year.

Pick: Ottawa +125

Carolina Hurricanes at Buffalo Sabres (-220, 5.5)

How are the Hurricanes going to score on the stingy Buffalo Sabres and stud goalie Ryan Miller? Good question.

Carolina has scored a pathetic 55 goals this season and has netted only two goals total in the past two games. The team?s power play also is a operating at a woeful 14 percent, one of the worst marks in the league.

Meantime, the Sabres have allowed just 54 goals this year, the second-lowest total in the NHL. However, the team has struggled to score goals, netting only 58 through 22 games.

Expect to see lots of back-checking, players diving in front of shots and plenty of bored goal judges.

Pick: Under 5.5

Hockey Night in Canada

Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens (+130, 5.5)

The basics

The Washington Capitals play the Montreal Canadiens Saturday in a rematch of a November 20 game where the Canadiens narrowly escaped the Verizon Center with a 3-2 victory.

The Capitals are 14-5-6 and snapped a three game losing streak with a victory over the Sabres Wednesday.

Montreal is 12-12-1 and had earned a point in four consecutive games (3-0-1) before a loss to the Penguins Wednesday.

Missing in action

Both the Capitals and Canadiens are missing key players from their lineups.

Alex Semin and Mike Knuble are just two of six players Washington is missing from its opening night roster.

Montreal is missing eight players due to injury. The total salary-cap hit for players out of the Canadiens lineup is $30 million. Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, and Andrei Markov headline those players not in uniform for the Habs.

Play for the tie?

Washington has gone under the total in three of its last four games, largely due to the play of Semyon Varlamov (4-0-2 in his last six games with a 1.48 goals against average and .949 save percentage).

According to Varlamov, he has ?gotten over being nervous?.

With so many offensive players on the shelf for Montreal, Jacques Martin?s strategy in recent games is to keep the score at 0-0 for as long as possible and hope for a break.

Eight of Montreal?s last 10 games have gone under the total.

Ovechkin ?struggling??

Alex Ovechkin had been ?struggling? since his return from a shoulder injury, with two goals, one assist and only fifteen shots in four games. But he played well in a win over the Sabres Wednesday.

"He had four legitimate chances to score goals. Maybe with another goalie, he would have put [another one] in, said coach Bruce Boudreau. He was playing really good and responsible and he was moving his legs.?

Ovechkin has 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 career games against the Canadiens.

Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks (-230, 5.5)

The basics

The late HNIC game features a Northwest Division rivalry game between two teams that appear to be headed in different directions.

The Edmonton Oilers are 10-12-3, and have won only four of their last sixteen games.

The Vancouver Canucks are 13-11-0 and have won three of their last four.

Injuries + Flu = 146

Edmonton has lost a league-leading 146 man games due to injury or sickness, most recently losing forward Ales Hemsky for an undetermined period of time.

"You lose him and it hurts the team because he's our best player,? said forward Andrew Cogliano of Hemsky.

Other Notable absences include goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, defenceman Denis Grebeshkov and forward Mike Comrie.

Vancouver is finally healthy as Daniel Sedin and Roberto Luongo have both returned from injury.

Luongo vs. ?

With Nikolai Khabibulin day-to-day and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers starting Friday, it?s anyone?s guess whether Khabibulin, Drouin-Deslauriers or prospect Devan Dubnyk will start for the Oilers Saturday.

Roberto Luongo called his win over Los Angeles Thursday his best game of the year.

"I'm seeing the puck well and this is something to build off of," Luongo said. "It's nice to get in a rhythm and play a lot of games.

Goals, anyone?

Edmonton has gone under the total in its last five of seven and will be missing its best offensive player. The under is also 4-0 in Edmonton?s last four when playing the second game of a back to back.

Vancouver has yet to give up three goals since a 6-1 defeat to the Blues on November 10. The under is 4-1 in Vancouver?s last four home games.

With Hemsky and Mike Comrie out of the lineup and Roberto Luongo in top form, goals may be difficult to come by.

Black Hawks Vs Kings

Black Hawks Vs Kings

I can Post some Previews,
I don't do very well with pucks.

Chicago Blackhawks (16-6-2) at Los Angeles Kings (14-10-2), 10:30 p.m.

The Chicago Blackhawks will try to bounce back from their first loss in three weeks when they visit the Los Angeles Kings for tonight's clash at Staples Center.

The Blackhawks won eight straight games following a shootout loss to Colorado on November 6, but were blanked Friday afternoon in Anaheim by Jean-Sebastien Giguere and the Ducks. Giguere made 28 stops for his first shutout of the season and Teemu Selanne scored twice to help Anaheim roll to the 3-0 win at Honda Center.

Cristobal Huet stopped 31 shots for the Blackhawks, who fell one victory shy of tying the franchise record for consecutive wins.

Tonight marks the final stop on a six-game road trip for Chicago, which is 6-3-1 as the visiting club this season. Following tonight, the Blackhawks will play eight of their next 10 games at home and that stretch will begin with next week's two-game homestand against Columbus and Nashville.

The Kings, meanwhile, come into tonight having lost three of their last four games. LA was in action last on Thursday night, when it dropped a road game against the Vancouver Canucks. The game was tied at 1-1 heading into the third period, but the Canucks scored three unanswered tallies in the final stanza to skate away with a 4-1 win.

Wayne Simmonds had the lone score for the Kings, while Jonathan Quick turned aside 30-of-33 shots in defeat.

"Its unfortunate. Both goaltenders played very well here tonight. I felt bad for Quick at the end of the game. He made some big stops," said Kings coach Terry Murray. "It was an interesting game."

The Kings could have defenseman Rob Scuderi back on the ice tonight after he missed the last five games with a lower-body injury. Scuderi is expected to be a game-time decision. Forward Jarret Stoll, who has seven goals and 18 points this season, is questionable for tonight after missing the last two games with a lower-body injury.

LA is just 5-4-1 as the host this year and has lost three straight and four of five on home ice.

The Blackhawks notched a 4-1 win over Los Angeles when the clubs met in the Windy City on November 9. Chicago has taken three straight and four of six overall in the series, but LA has won two in a row and three of the last four meetings at Staples Center.

Preview: Blackhawks (16-6) at Kings (14-10)

Date: November 28, 2009 10:30 PM EDT

A win over the Los Angeles Kings earlier this month started the Chicago Blackhawks' eight-game winning streak, which just got snapped.

The Blackhawks will have a chance to start a new winning run of success Saturday night when they close a six-game road trip against the Kings at Staples Center.

Chicago (16-6-2) fell 3-0 at Anaheim on Friday. The Blackhawks, who had outscored the first four opponents of their longest road trip of the season 20-5, gave up three power-play goals while being shut out for the second time in 2009-10. It was their first defeat since losing in a shootout to Colorado on Nov. 6, and came after they'd scored three short-handed goals in a 7-2 win Wednesday at San Jose.

"We had a big win in San Jose, but we didn't get back to what made us successful in that game - and that is hard work and playing as a team," center John Madden said. "We were a little soft out there, myself included. We gave up three power-play goals, and we have to find a way to stop that."

Chicago's opponents have scored on seven of their last 24 power-play opportunities (29.2 percent) after the Blackhawks killed 87.5 percent of power plays (56 of 64) to start the season.

The Blackhawks have won three straight over the Kings, but all of those victories have come at home, including a 4-1 victory Nov. 9 to start the recent winning streak. Playing the Kings in Los Angeles has been a bit more difficult. Chicago has lost three of its last four visits to Staples Center, getting outscored 19-6 in the three defeats.

While the Blackhawks have struggled in Los Angeles, the Kings haven't played much better there recently. They are looking to avoid suffering a fourth straight home loss and their fourth in five games overall.

Los Angeles (14-10-2) returns to Southern California after splitting a pair of road games in Canada. The Kings beat Edmonton 3-1 on Wednesday, but lost 4-1 to Vancouver the following night.

Los Angeles gave up three Canucks goals in the third period after Wayne Simmonds tied the game in the final minute of the second. Two of the goals came shortly after Vancouver had won a faceoff.

"Two faceoff goals against," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "It ended up being the part of the game that cost us."

Ryan Smyth, who has nine goals and 14 assists, missed a fourth straight game with an upper-body injury. Linemates Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams have been a non-factor without him, totaling just two assists in the four games. Kopitar has been stuck on 14 goals for the last eight games.

"There's no production," Murray told the Kings' official Web site. "There's certainly opportunities, and that's a bit of a concern for me."

Kopitar may be able to break out of his goal-scoring drought against Chicago. He scored in the loss to the Blackhawks earlier this month and has seven points in his last six games against them.
