I probably should apologize for taking up the space to thank each and every one who respoded to my post..

But please understand.

I tell my wife..my family..her family..and the few old friends who stuck beside me and the newer friends I have made along this journey..

NOTHING..ABSOLUTELY NOTHING..

is more important to me than my sobriety and the improvements I make in my life each and everyday..

Part of that intails making damn sure I thank those who give a damn about me.

I think the word is indulgence..

or something like that..

you guys understand..:mj15:

CONGRATS OLD SCHOOL!!! IT IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO. NOT TOO MANY HAVE THAT WILL POWER.

ON A SIDE NOTE I FOUND IT QUITE COINCIDENTAL YOU POSTED THIS STORY AT 11:22AM AS THAT IS MY B-DAY (11/22/77) EVEN MORE COINCIDENTAL ON DEC 11TH THE BEGINNING OF YOUR REHAB IS MY COUSINS B-DAY (WHO IS MORE LIKE A BROTHER TO ME)

HERE'S TO YOUR CONTINUED SUCCESS :toast: (DONT WORRY, ITS ONLY ROOT BEER)

Root Beer and Ice Cream made it a whole lot easier..

you are correct about the will power..

tuffest part of the journey

Thanks Pound

OS - great post. A happy day to you today and every day going forward. You're a great guy and it's good to know a little more about what has made you that way!

With sobriety comes humility..and the ability to review ones life in a gut wrenching tell yourself how it is way..

Some many chapters in those reviews that we could spend the whole day watching NCAA Buckets and sharing stories and it would only be about one-third of the book:

I call it..

How To Drink it All Away..
Then Try To Get It Back"

Maybe one day we can do that..

from a good guy to a better guy
Thanks Poon

While I still drink a few beers every so often, I don't drink nearly 1/10 as much as I did when I was in college. :00hour :00hour :00hour

kneifl

If I had used the same rational thinking and envoked moderation as you have I could buy us a couple of seats at this years Super Bowl..

Who is Dallas playing in the Super Bowl this year??:00hour

Thanks kneifl

Old School - Congrats and well done. You are a class act around here and even though I don't know you, I'm very proud of what you've accomplished. :00hour

It really is about accomplishment.

as egotistical[sp] as that sounds it is about reconstruction..

as my rehab doctor would say:

people..places..and things

all change..or you[me] remain the same.

Thanks you kellyindallas

congratulations on your sobriety! Maybe others will be inspired to follow in your footsteps.

Sure would be great..

The destruction we drunks leave in our path harms so many children.Having lived that as well in my childhood I can only hope that a sample of my story might jolt a parent towards help and a positive enviroment for family.

Thanks SixFive
It means a lot coming from a guy who has his stuff together.

Question: I have a friend who left for rehab last Tuesday. He is not a friend who I speak to on a regular basis (2-4 times per year) because we now live in different cities.

Do you have any recommendations on what my next step should be when he gets out?

dawgball,

The treatment center should have a pass out for friends and family at the end of his treatment. This post treatment helper should be available to you via mail as well.

That passout will contain info about enabling....making the post treatment friend feel comfortable....It will also cover the mood swings ..He will have good days and bad days..

It should also cover..

PEOPLE..PLACES and THINGS

all of which will have been covered with him over and over again because they are a big part of treatment and post treatment on his own
I personally didn't have a tuff time talking about what was taught because it was theraputic[sp] ...plus the reminders were great because it oh so tuff to change the the people we hung out with..the places we went..if it had beer..yeah buddy lets go..and the things we did.

A tuffer reality for me was the exit of all the so called buddies..It shocked to find out how very few people gave a damn about me..He may well find the same thing..hard to say not knowing the particulars.By checking in with him ever so often it is that reminder that somebody else cares.. Real important dawg..even some of my closest of friends didn't realize I struggled every friggin' night for a long time coming to grips with the real world..Problem is telling your friends ya cry yourself to sleep and sometimes helplessly search for something to do that doesn't lead ya back into the old and dark dungeon..So when talking to him express interest in how he is coping..Part of the program is being made aware that there will still be crisis..there will be demons on your shoulder calling you back into the hole..
If he wants to express any or those feelings and emotions or his ideas on how he will deal.. tell him to let it rip..One of my best friends, still to this day, would stop in and say..Do you want to rant?..let it rip!

I hope this is of some help..

dawg..he has at least one good friend..

he is one step closer to recovery with a buddy like you .

OS,

I can honestly tell you, the support you gave me almost 3 years ago played a major part in giving me the strength to quit drinking. I know exactly how you feel right now. It's wonderful isn't it? At one point in our lives, we couldn't function without alcohol. What the hell were we thinking? LIFE IS GOOD my friend! Just as you've always told me, " it only gets better". VERY PROUD OF YOU MAN!

Congrats and thanks for the post. I'm gonna read it again.

Old School = My hero :hail

It's all about trying to help good people get better..You just needed someone to tell you IF you slay the demons AND YOU CONTINUE to slay the demons that the rewards were greater than you could even imagine..

you are the hero..a dad who can take walks with his wife and family and suddenly burst out laughing...cracking a smile..do a little jig..and say......

"Life is Good...and It Only Gets Better"

My friend ..let ya in on a little secret..

It even gets better.....:00hour
