I have been there twice.I got robbed the last time I was there, actually someone tried to steal from me the first time I was there, when he pulled out a knife I just stood my ground and he went on his way.
There are some fantastic places to eat there.I enjoyed the places call Brasseries(spelled something like that).

I spent a weekend there while I was at an exchange program with University of Innsbrook in 1994, and I was there again for a long weekend in 2004.

Nothing stands out as the main reason, but I am not a big fan overall. In the 2004 trip, we did some tourist stuff, but mostly just ate and drank wine at sidewalk cafes. Edinburgh, Amsterdam and London, which rounded out that trip, all appealed much more to me than Paris.

Maybe it's just me, but the "subway" is the most confusing train system I have ever ridden.

Don't advertise that you live on the same continent as America.

Site-see in the usual places in the city...but it's nothing major, just another dirty city IMO.

I enjoyed the countryside much more. Definitely hit up Notre Dame. I took a night time boat ride on the Seine that was beautiful and I would recommend.

well the fiance is coming to visit me in march, and she wants to visit paris "world's most romantic city" blah blah, so as much as I was against it (I heard it is not all that it is made to be), I agreed to visit for 4 days. I have done some research and she has a list of places to visit etc Just wanted to know if anyone was able to recommend any places they visited that one wouldn't read about in a guide book.

thanks

Agree about the Metro, at least at first. Once you get the maps figured out, you are good to go.
I'm in the minority here, Paris, along with Amsterdam and Prague, are my favorite cities in Europe to spend time in.
The French in Paris are quite rude and will be even ruder once they hear your American accent and if you don't speak French it will even be worse. That being said, just get used to ignoring their rudeness and you will be fine.
4 days you say...hum..here are a couple of ideas--all listed in the guide books, but these would be my choices.
I always liked going out to Pierre Lachaise cemetery--yes, for Morrison's grave but there are a lot of other famous--and infamous-- people buried there, too.
A walk up the champs elysees to people watch and do some window shopping--unless your loaded, then you can do some real shopping--ending at the Arc de Triomphe is a good way to kill a few hours.
Notre Dame Cathedral is worth checking out as is the rest of island it sits on.
A walk on the Left Bank browsing the art galleries and bookstores might be to your liking and a visit to the Louvre-and the thousands of Japanese tourists who always seem to be there--along with my favorite Paris museum, the Musee d'orsay are an idea also.

I agree about rudeness factor, and you are right that once you learn the direction on the maps, then you are good to go. Coincidentally, my favorite cities in Europe are Prague and Amsterdam, although I had a hell of a good time in Munich.......

Munich? you there for Octoberfest? Only been to Munich once for less than a day and didn't see that much of the city--got in in the early AM on a overnight train from Amsterdam, went to the hostel, slept most of the day, got up went to the Hafbrau Hous for a bit then caught another overnight train to Budapest...

I spent a great weekend there with about 20 friends. All of our time was spent in the Hofbrau Haus and another nearby biergarten. It was July, I think. Having such a large crowd with us is what made that weekend. I have fond memories, but my recollection is blurry at best.......

Anthony,

Just make sure you carry your cdn flag with you. Talk to the shop keepers about Montreal and such, they love that stuff. They still will be rude, just not as much.

My wife and I try to go every couple of years, spent our honeymoon there. It is a beautiful part of the world.

I agree with Redsfann, skip the Louvre and go to Musse d'orsay. You'll see most of the impressionist works there and much less busy.

One place to check off is the Department Store "Les Printemps" Take your finace there for a few hours of shopping then have lunch/dinner at any of the restaurants around there. Plus the eye candy around that area is awesome.

The other place I would reccomend is checking out "Les Invalides." Awesome Museums and seeing the military history is great. As well being able to tour around Napoleon's tomb. Really get a great sense of history.

Eiffel Tower, no more exciting than the CN Tower back home for you, so I would skip it. Plus you can see it as you come in from the airport.

If you want to do one cheesy tourist thing, go have a drink at Hemingway Bar at the Ritz. Actually He never drank at this bar, used to be the ladies waiting room in Hemingway's day. Anyway, cool to see all the history in it and spend 85Euros on drinks. But that is Paris excess.
If you do go, order your lady a Serendipity. Basically a daquiri, but comes with a red rose garnish. She will love it!

If you have any of questions, feel free to email me if you still have it or get it again from Jack.

Have a great time!

:00hour

Only time I tried to do the Eiffel Tower I was with my girlfriend, now my wife. Had plans to go to the top after dark--well one of the notorious one-day workers strikes hit that afternoon and the tower was closed....

trust me, it isn't my choice to go to paris, but she is set on it for the romantic aspect and the shopping.

As many on here, I love amsterdam, great city, though I feel short there, the dutch are a tall bunch!

Thank you for your ideas guys, much appreciated and I will make sure to post some pics of the trip.

Funny thing is, she is coming to see me in england, for 10 days, yet we are spending 3 days here (I'll show her around campus, then head to london for a day), 4 days in paris and 3 days in Barcelona (though I have family there who will take care of us).

Thanks again gentlemen. Much appreciated!
:)

The Palace of Versailles
It's a half hour train ride outside of Paris

There's no way anyone can go to Paris and not take a day to visit Versailles! To avoid waiting in line forever, buy tickets ahead of time or go early. Make sure you take the full day to enjoy all there is to take in, inside and out.

update:

decided to increase our stay in paris to 5 days from 4. versailles is scheduled as a full day trip, beautiful place. Currently, negotiating on a studio deal I found, much better deal than being at a hotel. We both decided we want the parisian feel during our stay.
