Really disappointed here that no one put down the greatest gambling movie of all time...nominated for 10 academy awards....All 4 actors were nominated for best actor-actress and best supporting....filmed in black and white...there has to be some of you here in MJ's that has to agree with me......
The Hustler.......Paul Newman plays Fast Eddie Felson...many critics said Newman's Cool hand Luke and fast Eddie were his greatest performances ever.Newman didn't get the academy award that year but gave it to him 25-30 years later in The Color of Money...everyone knew he got screwed in 1961..payback...yrs later
Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats....a far cry from Ralph Kramdem and the Honeymooners....George C. Scott.....great cast.....

one of my all time favorite quotes..

Fast Eddie....to Fats...after Eddie was beaten the day before.......fast Eddie is running the table...

You know, I got a hunch, fat man. I got a hunch it's me from here on in. One ball, corner pocket. I mean, that ever happen to you? You know, all of a sudden you feel like you can't miss? 'Cause I dreamed about this game, fat man. I dreamed about this game every night on the road. Five ball. You know, this is my table, man. I own it.

Willie Mosconi was hired to shoot all the trick shots in the movie....but many people don't know Jackie Gleason shot all his own shots....not sure how many "takes" it took but all his shots were real.
If you younger guys have never seen this movie you'll enjoy it....not giving away the ending but love the final line of the movie.

Fast Eddie....." Fat man..you shoot a great game of pool"
Minnesota Fats....." So do you,Fast Eddie".

Just saw I had my 4,500 post..this one was 4,501...wow...that's a lot of BS I made you all put up with..over these years...sorry...

"the bunker"
i think "the gambler" was more about "gambling"..all aspects of gambling....not pool players or stings or some other offshoot of gambling....

it`s about a compulsive gambler.....a gambler`s craving for action whether it be betting hoops, playing the tables in vegas or taking on some street kid in a pick-up b-ball game....how it can control a persons life....

.how it f-cks up his life...and in the end,the need to gamble is so strong,he actually gambles with his own life...

if you haven`t seen it,check it out...caan is amazing...it`s all caan..not an all-star cast....a tour-de-force...

just my opinion...

What the fuck is a frush? :mj07:

I'll never understand how the Oscar committee could snub Booger for his spellbinding work in the ROTN movies. Shameful. :nono:

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
best obscure one would be "Bob Le Flambeur"

it's a French gangster/heist movie (styled after American ones) with "Bob the Highroller" showing him gambling at the track, in the casino, over the phone, with girls and his life.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SsZbBQJjJJ8?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SsZbBQJjJJ8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

But I do think "California Split" is the best pure gambling film--especially about the terrible gambler's tendencies we all know so well:

always liked elliott gould..he was a big star until he split with streisand...took that bitch about 5-10 years to turn a slick, well rounded blue chip actor with a thriving career into a jeff goldblum wannabe...

don`t f-ck with babs....:0002
