I know 95% of madjackers won't care...but check this out.......

History made today in Delray Beach, this has never happened before:

A crazy situation in Delray Beach Tennis Tourney regarding lucky loser.

A "lucky loser" is one who gets into a main draw despite losing in qualifying draw. If somebody pulls out of their first round match a "lucky loser" takes their spot. The highest ranked player that lost last round of qualifying takes that spot.

There were already three "lucky loser" spots in main draw and as stated the highest ranked players that lose in last round of qualifying get into the main draw (as long as they sign in). So as stated 3 "lucky losers" had already made it in (which is unusual).

Well it got so crazy that nobody that lost last round qualies or 2nd last round qualies signed the "lucky loser" sheet. So the spot in the main draw went to Robert Farah who lost 1st round qualies.

That has never happened before. It is almost unheard of for somebody getting into main draw that lost 2nd last round of qualies, that almost never happens.

But to have someone get into the main draw that lost 1st round of qualifying is beyond insane.

Now watch Farah win the tourney:tongue

Note: "Lucky Losers" have won tournaments before, last time that happened was 2 years ago.

Ya gotta love sports, ya just never know::SIB

Oh and huge props to Farah to sign the "lucky loser" sheet, what even possessed him to even think about signing up? And not too shabby, 1st round losers get 4 300 dollars. Not a bad chunk of change.

4 340 US dollars to be exact.

Minus taxes of course.

Better then the zero dollars for losing first round qualifying.

Note: The last "lucky loser" to win an ATP tournament.......On July 10th 2009 Rajeev Ram was a "lucky loser" who won the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships (Rhode Island). He beat Sam Querrey in the final.

A little more "lucky loser" trivia:

"It is rare for a lucky loser to win an Association of Tennis Professionals tournament; Francisco Clavet did it in 1990 in Hilversum, Christian Miniussi in 1991 in S?o Paulo, Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2008 in Zagreb and Rajeev Ram in 2009 in Newport. In total, seven people have done it from 1978 through 2010. A little less lucky was Andreas Haider-Maurer, who reached the final in Vienna (2010), eventually losing it to the top-seeded Jurgen Melzer."

But as I said it is beyond insane that Farah got into the main draw after losing in 1st round of qualies. Absolutely insane:scared

More info..............

In tennis, the rule for choosing a player to enter the main draw as a lucky loser is as follows: from all players eliminated in the final round of qualifying, the highest-ranked player in the ATP or WTA rankings is the first one to enter the draw, followed by the second highest-ranked player and so on (if more players withdrew before the start of the tournament). On rare occasions that there are more late withdrawals than losers in the last qualifying rounds, or players eligible for lucky losers are not available, a player who lost in the penultimate round of qualifying may enter as lucky loser.

Prior to the 2005 Wimbledon Championships, American player Justin Gimelstob faced George Bastl from Switzerland in the final qualification round. Gimelstob, who was the highest-ranked player remaining in the qualifying tournament, aggravated a chronic back complaint during his second qualification match against Vladimir Voltchkov. Gimelstob planned to withdraw before the match with Bastl, and informed his opponent of his intent. However, officials suggested that Gimelstob play at least one game, as it was almost certain someone would withdraw from the main draw before the tournament started, giving Gimelstob a good chance of getting a berth as a lucky loser (as well as giving him time for his back to recover).[3] Gimelstob did indeed enter the main draw as a lucky loser after the withdrawal of Andre Agassi, reaching the third round, where he lost to Lleyton Hewitt.

While Gimelstob's behavior was not generally considered unethical, it was nonetheless clear that any player in his position would have little incentive to play a competitive match. For example, a high-ranking player paired against a lower-ranked friend might deliberately lose the match to help his friend gain entry to the tournament, if the first player had already clinched a lucky loser spot. The possibility of bribery was also a concern.

Shortly thereafter, a new policy was introduced in Grand Slam tournaments. Since 2006, the four highest ranked players who lose in the last round of qualification take part in a four-way random draw, the results of which are used to determine the order in which each player will enter the main draw. Consequently, if only one main draw spot for a lucky loser is available, the highest-ranked loser has just a 25% chance of entering the draw, instead of 100% as in the past. This element of uncertainty helps to ensure that final-round qualifying matches remain competitive. However, this rule does not apply in all other tournaments.

As some know I used to play on the tour (I sucked I was in the "minor leagues"). But I can tell ya I have seen it all in the qualifying draw. The above rule change sounds good in theory but is bull shit, thankfully it only applies to Grand Slams.

Here is what I mean:

I get why they made the rule change, but here is why it is silly. If you are in the qualifying draw and in last round of qualifying and you are the top ranked player in the qualifying draw you know that if anybody pulls out you are in. Ok, so you get word that somebody pulled out of the main draw, bammo you know you are in. That's the way it should be. I have seen guys go out and play a meaningless match and get hurt. They know win or lose that they are in the main draw. They go out and play and get hurt and they are out. You have earned your spot based on your ranking. Keep in mind you do not know where you fit in the main draw. The qualifyers and lucky losers (if any) are only placed in the draw after the completion of the qualifying tourney. So it is not like you know that if I win I'll play Nadal, but if I lose I'll play Betty White, you have no idea who you'll play in the main draw. Bottom line is this, the goal is to get to the main draw, if you play one point and quit in final round of qualifying and know you are in the main draw, it is smart not "unethical". Plus it is actually selfish to beat the guy you are playing, you win he's out, you lose, you are both in. Now that changes in rare circumstances. I remember a match where the one dude (Player "A") fucked the other dudes (Player "B") girlfriend. Even though Player "B" was already in the main draw he sure has fuck wasn't going to allow Player "A" to get a spot in the main draw:142smilie

Player "B" won 6-3 6-0:SIB

By the way I have seen two guys play in last round of qualies and player "A" beats player "B". Then they both advance to main draw (Player "B" got LL) and in the main draw match player "B" beats player "A":scared

Bottom line, the rule that they use in Grand Slams is stupid. It just sounds good to the public. And in the Gimelstob example above, Gimelstob was smart, not unethical.

And another "Luck Loser" story.........

Back in 2000 there was the "West Africa Satellite". Back then the "minor leagues" of tennis had "Satellites" which were 23 day long events. Three tournaments followed by the "Masters". Simply put, you had to do well in the 3 weeks prior to make the "Masters" aka, the final week.

The money and the ranking points was all handed out in the final week.

Or in other words, you didn't get fuck all unless you made the "Masters"

Leg 1 - Lagos, Nigeria
Leg 2 - Lome, Togo
Leg 3 - Accra, Ghana
Masters - Accra, Ghana

I remember 85% of the players getting sick from the food. As you can imagine almost all the players stick together and eat the same food. By the time Ghana hit everybody was half dead. It was hilarious:mj07:

There were not enough players to fill the draw, the final event had 12 guys (was supposed to be 32). the only ones that were not sick were the locals. I still remember Gunther Darkey winning it all. He was from Ghana and stayed at home. He was the only guy healthy, everybody and I mean everybody, was sick. He would have won if he was on one leg:mj07:

It was like the Ebola virus struck:142smilie

Found a clip of Gunther (red shirt) on youtube:

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/u99PKnCeOiQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And not trying to bash Gunther, he did reach #485 in the world (2001), not too shabby:0008
