NFL Preseason Betting: Injuries & Scheduling
2015-nfl-preseason-betting-injuries-scheduling1b.jpg
We?ve already discussed some ways that handicapping the NFL Preseason differs from handicapping the NFL Regular Season.

Motivation is a much bigger factor than stats and matchups with the victories not really meaning anything and the limited playing time of the first-string players.

We also have to treat injuries to key players and scheduling quirks differently in the NFL Preseason than we normally would in a regular season or playoff game.

If a starting quarterback for a playoff caliber team ? say, Tom Brady ? were to miss a game, the pointspread would change dramatically. In the preseason, the number changes a bit, but not much. Since the key players don?t see much action to begin with, losing a key player doesn?t have a drastic effect on the outcome of the game.

One thing we do look for, however, is the AMOUNT of injuries on a team, as NFL squads tend to rest a starter with any injury to avoid that player getting hurt and missing time when the games do matter. If a team plays on taking the field missing 4 or 5 starters on one side of the ball, then that could have a huge impact on the start of the game ? an impact that won?t directly be taken into account by the online sportsbooks.

During the regular season, having a team play on short or extended rest from having a Thursday Night Football game or a Monday Night Football contest needs to be taken into account. Teams playing with a short week of rest have far less time to not only rest up, but prepare for their upcoming opponent. Teams coming off a bye week or with a week and a half of rest after a Thursday game typically has a big advantage.

That really doesn?t apply to the preseason, however, as the coaches are more concerned with finalizing their roster and practicing plays more than they are game-planning for their next NFL Preseason opponent. NFL Preseason games are played on Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays ? and having teams square off with different amounts of time off in between games in commonplace.

Don?t put too much stock into injuries and scheduling when handicapping your NFL Preseason games for the weekend. Instead, find the motivational advantages that can be the difference between a winning and losing effort against the pointspread.

We?ll be back next week with more NFL Preseason action in the meanwhile don't forget that we are giving away an All Inclusive Luxury Vacation to Costa Rica so CLICK HERE for details!
