For this week's NFL Betting Tutorial, we'll review matchup handicapping. We stress that this type of NFL handicapping strategy should be used in conjunction with other types, as there is a great deal of assumptions to be...
The 2015 NFL Regular Season kicks off this Thursday night in New England, as the defending Super Bowl Champs take the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams will be missing some notable players, with Steelers RB Bell and Patriots RB Blount both suspended. One player famously not suspended anymore is QB Tom Brady, who had his suspension lifted. The Pats were a three-point favorite for most of the summer, but with Brady now back in the lineup the Pats flew up to a seven-point favorite before settling at the moment to 6.
Another high profile matchup pits the Baltimore Ravens against the Denver Broncos. You might recall this was the exact same matchup and location for the opening game of the 2013 season ? a game that Payton Manning threw seven touchdown passes in as the Broncos won in a 49-27 blowout. Denver is currently listed as a 4.5-point home favorite.
The Sunday night game pits the New York Giants against the Cowboys. Dallas was 8-0 straight up on the road last year, but only 4-4 here at home. One of those home victories did come against these Giants, however, beating New York 31-21 as a five-point favorite. The G-Men are currently listed as a six-point underdog.
As the norm for the opening weekend, there are two Monday Night Football games. The first one has the new-look Philadelphia Eagles taking on another offensive-heavy team in the Atlanta Falcons. These two teams might just be the two fastest offenses in terms of amount of time in between plays. Not surprisingly, this game features the highest over/under on the board currently at 55 points. The Eagles are a three-point road chalk, but this game might come down to whoever has the ball last.
The late game on Monday night has Minnesota visiting San Francisco. The Vikings are becoming a popular dark horse pick to come out of the NFC, after a solid rookie season by QB Teddy Bridgewater and the return of RB Peterson. The 49ers look to rebound from a disappointing season a year ago, and no longer have RB Frank Gore in the backfield. Minnesota is at the moment a 2.5-point road favorite.
Other notable favorites in Week 1 include Green Bay (minus Jordy Nelson) which is currently a 6.5-point favorite at Chicago ? currently the biggest favorite on the board. Tampa Bay is a three-point home favorite vs. Tennessee in a battle of the two most high-profile rookie quarterbacks. The Jets are a three-point home choice vs. Cleveland in a game that could have big implications on the number one overall draft pick.
We?ll be back next week to preview the second week of the NFL Regular Season.
