For starters, I don't put a lot of stock in "pre-season" SOS. But they def. are fun to look at. Lets see how this "pre-season" SOS is calculated.
Notes on the formula
Each conference team started with a base number. That number was reached by determining the overall 2004 winning percentage of each conference (based on 2005 membership).
For arguments sake, if all the teams in my conf. played CRAP opponents in OOC, my conf. will be rated HIGH! :mj07: Winnng/losing on road means nothing. Playing at home carries same weight as playing on road? So for arguments sake if I played all my OOC games at home and against crap teams, I would be given the highest rating! GREAT!
Teams were then given credit for playing 2004 bowl teams in the non-conference (.0178 per team)
Some conf. have 6-7 automatic bowl slots have smaller automatic bowl slots. I also don't think there is a lot of carryover. For every team that builds momentum into next season, there is team who loses it (or loses players). You get major kudos for playing a 2004 bowl team in the WAC, MAC, Conf. USA, Big East? You get same kudos for playing one of those teams vs playing a team like USC, Auburn, OU, Miami? Doesn't make sense.
The thinking being that even though it is a new year, bowl teams, especially really good bowl teams, will have some carryover
:mj07:
[Teams were then given credit] for each game overall against a 10-win team (.109)
So if you play a team who plays 3 crap OOC opponents and all at home (3 wins), 3 crap conf. opponents (3 wins) and wins 4 other tough/semi tough games, they get major kudos? What about playing a really good team who is not afraid to play tough OOC opponents or not afraid to play on road? Take the SEC for example. That is the easiest conf. to run the table in statistically. No other conf. has teams running the table same rate as the SEC. On top of that, SEC (as a whole) plays weak OOC opponents and doesn't travel on road.

USC playing the 56th toughest, damn Scott said they loaded up their schedule this year.
:nooo:
Where did I say that?
I do know you and a whole lot of other posters bashed USC last year during pre-season saying there schedule was a joke. I can bring up you and others quotes. USC last year finished with the #7 rated SOS according to Jeff Sagarin. If you disagree (and I know you love to bash Sagarin without ever giving a reason) with how Sagarin calculates SOS, I would love to hear WHY and tell me who is better and WHY :nono: Otherwise, do not bash his calculations because he doesn't calculate SOS based soley on wins/losses like other popular sites do. There is no perfect way, but Sagarin IMO has the most logical criteria in factoring his SOS. He also tells you how he does it.

you USC rubbers might want to tone it down
a tad...trust me, when you fall...and you will...
this big trip you're on will bite you in the ass...

Nobody can stay on top forever but USC might accomplish something no team has. Winning 3 straight National Championships in the poll era!
It doesn't look like USC will fall anytime soon because Pete Carroll is out-recruiting everybody. BY A LANDSLIDE! No team in the country is bringing in 5-star talent like USC is. Nobody has ever recruited like USC has been in the history of CFB. The great Miami, ND, FSU classes and years did not bring in 5-star recruits at this rate.
To be honest, I think USC is just getting started. Carroll is still shaping up his team the way he wants it. He has only coached at USC for 4 years. Amazing thing is Carroll is working just as hard now as when he got to USC. No complacency. I told everyone 3 years ago here at MJ's that Carroll was building a dynasty at USC.
