2008 MLB season opens with 14 games on tap
Technically, the 2008 Major League Baseball season began this week with the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics in Tokyo, but, unofficially, the real opening day comes Monday, with 14 games on tap.
betED.com will have Moneyline, Runline and Totals betting available for all the action, which starts at 1:05 pm ET with the New York Yankees opening their final season in the venerable Yankee Stadium ? the 85-year-old shrine is set to close after this season ? with a series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
That match-up will feature New York?s Chien-Ming Wang on the mound against Toronto?s Roy Halladay. Wang was 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA last season while Halladay was 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA.
The 2008 MLB season will feature a number of new faces with new teams, including three ace pitchers who changed area codes during the off-season: Johan Santana was traded by Minnesota Twins to the New York Mets; the Oakland Athletics sent Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks; and the Baltimore Orioles dealt Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners.
And while the Red Sox are favored to win the AL East Division (-130 at betED.com MLB Future Bets) and repeat as World Series champions ? which would be their third title in five years ? a number of teams have beefed up to take a run at them.
The Detroit Tigers, who are favored to win the AL Central Division (-130), added third-baseman Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins and Gold Glove-winning shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves.
The Chicago Cubs, favored to repeat as NL Central winners (-135), have added outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to an already formidable offense.
With the Mets, Santana joins Pedro Martinez as the Mets try to forget about last season's collapse and reclaim the NL East title won by the Philadelphia Phillies last year.
And in the West, the NL West is expected to be even tighter than last year, when any one of four teams could have taken the division title. Colorado and Arizona, teams that played for the NL pennant last season, again look strong, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, with new manager Joe Torre, and San Diego, which came within three outs of making the playoffs last year, should also be improved.
In the AL West, the Los Angeles Angels, with Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero, and the Mariners, with Felix Hernandez and Erik Bedard anchoring a solid rotation, are legitimate pennant contenders.
