A very important day is coming up, June 9, 2012 at Belmont Park. For the first time in 34 years, a horse, I?ll Have Another, will have a chance to win the Triple Crown.

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (although sometimes shortened to Triple Crown) consists of three races for three-year-old thoroughbred horses. Winning all three of these horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment of a thoroughbred racehorse. Although in recent years, winning this Crown has become a very rare achievement. The majority of the bred horses are specialized on a limited range of distances.

These three races are consisted of:

Kentucky Derby (1-1/4 miles or 2.01 km dirt track) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Preakness Stakes (1-3/16 miles or 1.91 km dirt track) at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Belmont Stakes ( 1-1/2 miles or 2.41 km), at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, the longest dirt track in thoroughbred racing.

The Belmont Stakes, the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown, is named after August Belmont, who had been a leading banker and a racing man of the 19th century. He was also the first President of the Jockey Club in 1867.

It has been 34 years since a horse won the Triple Crown, and the last horse to win it was Affirmed in 1978. If I?ll Have Another can manage to win this last leg?it would make him the 12th horse in history to win it.
