Sevilla boosted by recalls
Thursday, 10 March 2005
Sevilla FC are able to welcome back several key players as they tackle Parma FC in the first leg of their UEFA Cup Round of 16 tie.
Boost for Caparr?s
Home coach Joaqu?n Caparr?s - who will watch from the stands after a sending-off late in the second-leg success against Panathinaikos FC - is able to recall midfielder Jose Luis Mart? and wing-back Adriano Correia, with the latter's recovery from a thigh injury coming well ahead of schedule.
'Tough contest'
Also back from injuries are Fernando Sales, Jes?s Navas and Daniel Alves, but defender David Castedo suffered a groin strain in Saturday's 3-0 defeat against Club Atl?tico de Madrid and is doubtful. Winger Navas, whose speed could be deployed down the right of the Sevilla attack, expects "a tough contest", adding: "We will struggle if we are not completely focused and don't go into the game giving absolutely everything we've got," he said.
Relegation relief
Parma enjoyed a more satisfying weekend than Sevilla, easing their relegation worries when a last-gasp effort from Brazilian midfield player Fabio Simplicio edged a five-goal thriller at home to Cagliari Calcio. Marco Marchionni came on as a 65th-minute substitute and looks to have recovered from the muscle injury that ruled him out of the 2-0 defeat by S.S. Lazio last week.
Quarter rested
Coach Pietro Carmignani, though, will be without the suspended Jorge Bolano Correa and Paolo Cannavaro, with the latter beginning a two-match ban. He has also decided to rest Stefano Bettarini, Fabio Simplicio, Alberto Gilardino and Domenico Morfeo ahead of Sunday's Serie A game against Atalanta BC with Parma still only three points clear of the drop zone.
Balancing priorities
Carmignani explained: "We have to think about the game against Sevilla but we cannot forget about our current situation in Serie A. I will rest some players but it doesn't mean we are going to Spain sure of losing the match. We know that we will play only the first half of the tie there and we will have the second half in front of our own fans. We have already proved during the tournament that we can do well even without some key players."
Uefa Cup Preview: Sevilla-Parma
A full squad Sevilla will host a Parma side packed with reserves in the first leg of the Uefa Cup last sixteen.
BACKGROUND
Sevilla and Parma have had different fortunes in their respective leagues this season. Whilst the Spanish side is fighting for a Champions League spot, the Italians are trying to avoid the relegation.
For this reason, the Uefa Cup takes a secondary seat in Parma?s objective-list of the season as they focus entirely on next Sunday?s direct relegation encounter against Atalanta. On the other hand, the high-flying Sevilla aim to win this trophy and with a full-team at their disposal will be hoping to secure the qualification to the quarter finals already from the first leg.
A motivated home team will therefore try to play with their best possible formation to take advantage of a Parma side which will not have much interest in this game which will feature many second string players as various starters have been left back home, including Gilardino and Morfeo.
PROBABLE FORMATIONS
Sevilla (4-4-2):
Esteban ? Alves, Ramos, Navarro, David ? Navas, Lopez, Marti, Jesuli ? Baptista, Antonito
Parma (3-5-1-1):
Frey ? Bovo, Cardone, Contini ? Camara, Dessena, Grella, Vignaroli, Pisanu ? Marchionni ? Ruopolo
PREDICTION
Parma have improved in recent weeks, but even with a full squad they would have had problems against Sevilla. Now that the Gialloblu will mostly play with reserves, the match is definitely swinging towards the Spanish side.
