Tornado just west of OKC was very dangerous type to chase Friday evening. Not only killed these three but another weather channel vehicle was caught in storm and lucky to survive.

:scared

Crews haul away a mangled truck on Sunday, June 2, that storm chasers Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and Carl Young were using to track the tornado that hit El Reno, Oklahoma. The three men, who had devoted their lives to hunting powerful storms died in the middle of the chase. Seventeen tornadoes were reported in the Oklahoma City and St. Louis areas on Friday, May 31.

Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West told NBC News that the men were in a small Chevrolet that was found upright in a ditch about a mile from Interstate 40 southeast of El Reno. Deputies said the vehicle looked as if it had been put through a trash compactor.

One body was found a quarter-mile away, a second was found a quarter-mile away in the opposite direction and the third was found inside the car. The engine was thrown a half-mile away, and the front wheels were ripped off.

Discovery Special for Storm Chasers

The Discovery Channel will air a special Wednesday to honor three storm chasers who were killed May 31 in a deadly tornado. The series Storm Chasers had chronicled the dangerous lives of Carl Young, Tim Samarus, and his son, Paul Samaras, who served as videographer. The three were gathering scientific data about the May 31 tornado in Oklahoma City when they were killed. ?Mile Wide Tornado: Storm Chasers Tribute? will have highlights from past episodes, as well as focus on the May 20 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, that killed 24.
