Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, waves during her speech at the Republican ?

Friday may be the start of New York's Fashion Week, but couture has been in the Minnesota convention hall all week.

It kicked off on Monday with Cindy McCain and First Lady Laura Bush in Oscar de la Renta.

Vanity Fair editors estimated that McCain's fierce saffron shirt dress with the popped collar, diamond earrings, four-strand pearl necklace, white Chanel watch and strappy shoes totaled up to $313,100.

And Bush's white sensible suit, Stuart Weitzman heels and pearl stud earrings would ring up to $4,325.

While Bush's fashion sense has blossomed into subtle elegance, McCain is still evolving in her style. The purple pant suit and leather jackets of the early part of her campaign have given way to crisper, more contemporary dresses with richer colors.

"She appreciates very well-made clothes and that have rich, luxurious fabrics," said Sasha Iglehart, Glamour magazine's Deputy Fashion Director. "Such clothes could wear the person and she seems to be able to carry it off."

are you now a fashion critic ?......:mj07:

i am pretty sure that the women's cloths are rented or given to wear for that 1 night in return for publicity...similiar to what the actresses do for oscar night & other award nights....it's great advertising for the designers...

Al, I maintain that we could put Dr. Freeze in a $300,000 dress and he would look good to the Republican delagates!

And I seem to remember a lot of Republicans crying about Edwards $400.00 haircut.

Come to think of it, and please take this in the spirit in which it is written. If I remember right you don't cut too bad a figure in a kilt yourself:SIB

Thanks Skul, not sure if you agree but I think with that cro-magnum chin of Mrs Obama she would of been better served wearing a scoop neckline. Also the color purple I believe was a bit too harsh. Maybe something softer like lilac to soften that springsteenian chin.

I have no problem if a guy wears a pink shirt. It is nice to know what team he is on.:mj07:

In all fairness, I believe the 300k was the worth of the earings, at least that's what someone on the radio was saying. Who knows not my cup of tea.

yup, when dresses or shoes at the oscars etc. are listed at having that much value, it is because of the jewelry attached, which is generally removed after the event.
