2(9+3) is the first calculation that should be made as the way it is written, the entire term 2(9+3) is the denominator.

48 divided by 24 = 2

for further clarification to come up with the 288 number --> which is an understandable error because the way fractions are shown on a computer screen and the lack of multiple line spacing...

you would neeed to show it something like this:

(48/2) (9+3)
that way you are separating 48/2 as its own function and (9+3) as its own function.

It's called Order of Operations, like ppabart noted, except he missed the first line of the order.

Order of operations --> PEMDAS
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction

no wonder you guys can't keep arrow's record straight. :D

48/2(9+3)

Parentheses first.....left with 48/2(12)

Then multiplication and division are done left to right...if I'm thinking correctly

24(12) = 288

Well, I was never a math wiz. I did things simply....left to right. Why can't the math boys?

Order of operations my ass! How about order of common order? LOL!

There is a tremendous difference between 2(9+3) and 2*(9+3)

The distributive property of multiplication CLEARLY states that the 2(9+3) is an entire statement and CANNOT be broken up. 2(9+3) follows the distributive property which can be rewritten as (2*9+2*3). Let me repeat the 2 outside of the parenthesis follows the distributive property of multiplication and must be factored and simplified before performing any other operations on it. You do NOT compute this expression from left to right until you use Algebra to simplify the statement 2(9+3).
