It varies quite a bit. Some are brainwashed from the beginning and never snap out it. Most change their views as their own dreams are realized or squashed - either way it's from a selfish viewpoint. There are a relative few very special individuals that make it into old age, always believing in this concept of growing and evolving, regardless of their own fortunes.
So yeah, 4 is probably the answer.
