OUTRIGHTS:

90th PGA Championship:

"(Oakland Hills has) the toughest set of greens we play in major championship golf." ~ Jack Nicklaus
- - http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24114397-5010360,00.html

Chris DiMarco(200/1) e.w.
- - http://www.pgatour.com/2008/tournaments/r476/07/31/thursday.transcript.cdimarco/index.html

Lee Westwood(40/1) e.w.
- -
And one I missed when peeking ahead on Saturday, even though I knew it would be a play a week ago, when it was probably 200/1 . . .

Darren Clarke(100/1) e.w.
- - My post before his 6th place at Firestone:

Darren Clarke(150/1) e.w.
- - I love the change of scenery. I love the reappearance on the big stage. I love the wind under the wings coming from a special invite for next week. I don't dislike the pairing with Harrington.

My post before Abu Dhabi, after a profitable wager on Joburg Open:
Darren Clarke(33/1) e.w.
- - From my post last week at madjacksports on Clarke(16/1 e.w.), when I couldn't log on to UBF in the wee hours: I'm all in for a good while I suspect. . . . Everything tells me Darren is keen to go, and he just needs to not want it so badly that he gets in his own way, and he'll tap into his class in really short order. A candidate to soar - I mean soar - in 2008 IF his balky putter then gets uncommonly friendly, and that then happening would not surprise me in the least.
I've been judicious in avoiding Darren on the really grainy greens in Asia, but I believe the greens this week are less peculiar than many. In the interim, I've seen him exhibit more or less ideal equanimity about the process . . . Post-Masters brings a fresh start on Phase II of his season, and an uncommon pairing with Greg Norman adds spice . . . Now, cue more flailing.
I though Dazzler would kick on better than he has, and I've been reasonably judicious with my handsome profit (from Asia) because that balky putter has defined his efforts in Europe, but nothing has changed . . . "I'm all in for a good while I suspect."

Adding:

Outrights:

Phil Mickelson(10/1) e.w.
- - - - FWIW, when Mickelson won the PGA at Baltusrol, he was paired with his good friend DLIII in the 4th round, and they are paired together (with Beem) for the 1st and 2nd rounds this year. While I?ve got a tiny saver on Love, it?s really another reason for my play on Mickelson . . .
I missed the front nine on Saturday when Phil was apparently driving it crooked, but I saw plenty from Firestone, and it was surely the most complete golf I've seen from Lefty all year. Analyst David Feherty commented at the start on Sunday that Phil was looking really close to some brilliant stuff, and from my much greater distance it surely looked to me like a rising barometer was in the forecast. A couple of marginal tee shots at the death are not going to color my take from the event . . . And when it comes to criticism of f/k/a Hefty's propensity for overpreparation, I think his staying away from the course on Monday offers a peek at what he?s thinking and feeling after letting one get away on Sunday, and also his self-assessment regarding the state of his game (and he's now skipped his practice round on Tuesday). Phil's skill and imagination around the greens should surface as invaluable, and his shotmaking around 'dem Hills won't be lagging either, IMO . . . I can't see him not being a big part of the storyline on the weekend.

Paul Casey(50/1) e.w.
- - Casey is streaky good, and has been since his college days, and that's been a reliable standard for capping his play when in (and to a lesser extent out of) form. He still hasn't brought the refinement to his shot repertoire and entire game that he's going to need for the long haul, and that worries me some this week, but I like what's at stake with his form where it's at.

Hunter Mahan(50/1) e.w.
- - As I posted when I made Mahan my final selection at Birkdale: "Far too popular for my liking, but he has the right stuff. Driving will be his ticket to anywhere thereabouts." . . . Butch Harmon has said Oakland Hills is a driving and putting course, which would suit this choice if it's true. I heard a scribe more or less say everyone is going to just two putt and move on on these poa annua greens, which means Vijay's left hand low long putting will not hurt him as much here as it did at Firestone.;I disagree, and think some will hate these surfaces while others will absolutely embrace them. . . . Mahan has been believable in his positive comments from his U.S. Amateur experiences, and while with his struggles at Birkdale really came as no surprise, one big brain fart this week would shock me, and harm from his Ryder Cup comments seem very unlikely to me to structure how his week unfolds.
For now and the future, a good read on Hunter Mahan: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0HFI/is_5_59/ai_n25362548/pg_1?tag=artBody

David Toms Top American(66/1)(1/4 for 1-2-3-4) e.w.
- -"Some introductions were in order last week at Firestone when David Toms walked onto the practice range. He hasn?t been seen on the PGA Tour since he tied for 27th at the Travelers Championship, turning down his spot in the British Open . . . The reason? Toms was in dire need of a vacation . . . The 41-year-old from Louisiana had played nine out of 11 weeks, only twice finishing in the top 20, when he decided it was time to take a break. He headed off to his lake house with his wife and two children, with plans of returning to the John Deere Classic. But he was having so much fun, and his game was not in shape, so he passed on Royal Birkdale . . . ?I had a great time,? said Toms, who had never taken such a long break in the summer without being forced out by injury. ?It was hard to force myself to come back.? . . . He did at a tough place ? the Bridgestone Invitational ? and got progressively better with a 70-69 weekend to tie for 48th. Toms was among the early arrivals to Oakland Hills on Monday, playing 18 holes . . . Toms made some sacrifices with his game to spend time with his family. He has yet to record a top 10, meaning he most likely will not be part of the Ryder Cup team for the first time since 1999. And he is 130th in the FedEx Cup standings with only two tournaments remaining before the playoffs begin."
More: http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/25547039.html
10 straight cuts made, but never into a purple patch. Just enough time to catch Azinger's eye before he makes his Captain's picks. I was giving Toms some serious consideration before I saw a clip of him holing out from the middle of the fairway for an eagle on Monday (#12?), and looking relaxed in his interview afterwards in which he said par looks like a good score to him on every hole. I see value here without the feel of the inevitable value loser.

Previously posted plays on Chris DiMarco, Lee Westwood, and Darren Clarke.

That leaves savers on Chad Campbell, Stephen Ames, Sean O'Hair, Camilo Villegas and Ben Curtis.

Matchups/3-Balls/Propositions/etc.:

- Total players under par will be 4 to zero(+185)
- Total players under par will be 5-10(+175)
- - Course is receptive enough so I don't expect the first PGA since 1976 with a winning total over par, but a strict test that will see only a handful of the sharpest contenders earning their way to subpar status over 72 holes.

- Phil Mickelson finishing position Un10'(+112)

- Lee Westwood finishing position Un20'(-104)

Round 1 plays (2pts):

Brandt Snedeker to beat Angel Cabrera +100 @ WSEX [also available @ Pinnacle]
Last week's one-shot loss to Cabrera was the first time since February (seven events) that Snedeker has failed to finish ahead of his opponent. With Cabrera missing the cut in his last three attempts at this title, a return to the previous trend should be in order this week

Woody Austin to beat Rocco Mediate -110 @ Five Dimes
This is the major most-suited to Woody and it shows in his record: seven previous appearances and seven cuts made, including a 2nd place finish last year. With Rocco's form starting to wane, he should struggle to beat Woody tomorrow

Sergio Garcia to beat Padraig Harrington -105 @ Five Dimes
Opposed Harrington last week and will do so again ... as he admitted last week, he was a long way from where he needed to be in terms of his game following the off-course distractions of winning the Open again. And with a relatively poor record in this event - four missed cuts from nine attempts and a best finish of 17th - the value should be with Garcia in this matchup

Sean O'Hair to beat Miguel Angel Jimenez -101 @ Pinnacle [also available @ WSEX]
It was an impressive performance by Jimenez last week, but his position in the Ryder Cup team should have been more certain had he not double-bogeyed the last hole. With a best finish of 31st this decade in this event, there may be good reason to expect Jimenez not to carry forward his form, so I'll back O'Hair who has a better record in this event and finsihed only a shot behind his opponent last week

Followed Paddy for a bit today at the practice round and he did not look at all sharp.

I walked inside the ropes last Sat. at Akron with
Darren Clarke and Sergio as an observer, Clarke bogeyed 18 for
a pretty easy 65. He sure played good, been bet
down to 64-1 at my place, might be worth a small
bet. GL

One 72 hole match I like.

Darren Clarke over DiMarco -139

More of a play against DiMarco than a play for Clarke, who appears to be forming up a bit.

Brian Gay 8/11 over Goggin and Brenzel (Round 2)
Goggin hasn't teed it up since the AT&T National and finally provided insight as to why this week. "[In early July], I was reaching across the car trying to get a (baby) car seat and I heard a pop go under my rib," Goggin said. The incident left him with a pulled oblique muscle behind his ribcage and prevented him from hitting full shots until midweek at Oakland Hills. Although he added that he's often played well after an extended break, it didn't happen today, with six bogeys and two triples on his card. If he's hurting, don't be surprised if he withdraws before completing 36 holes

I would have locked in a fade on Goggin in 3 ball, 18 h and 72h but i was out of town. Good Luck

Round 2 plays (2pts):

Jim Furyk to beat Anthony Kim -115 @ Carib [also available @ Bet365]
Kim will continue to shoot bogeys with his style of play on such a tough course and the conditions will be harder in the afternoon with the greens crusting and the winds strengthening; Furyk should be more suited to these conditions

Steve Stricker to beat Robert Karlsson +101 @ Pinnacle [also available @ Bet365 and WSEX]
Opposing Karlsson who dropped two shots when in sole possession of the lead yesterday and even though he finished the day tied for the lead, it will still be hard to play well when probably still holding the joint lead when starting this afternoon. He has only held the first round lead once since 2003 - the 2005 Open de Madrid - and he shot 76 in the 2nd round
