A Bowl Three-Pack
By Mike Harrison/SPORTSBETTING.COM
While the first few bowl games always seem to sneak up on us, it?s usually right around Christmas Eve and Christmas Day that ?Bowl Season? officially seems to kick-off for sports fans and bettors.
So enjoy the holiday season with family and friends and while you?re doing that, you can keep one eye on the TV to catch some college football action.
Here are four matchups over the next week I?m paying particular attention to:
Friday, December 26, 2008
Motor City Bowl
Florida Atlantic vs. Central Michigan
I?ve always liked the Motor City Bowl and it has nothing to do with the location (have you ever been to Detroit in winter?or summer?or spring?!!!) anyway, it?s because it consistently produces one of the most entertaining matchups of the bowl package.
So after the festivities from the 25th, plunk down on the couch on Boxing Day and catch Florida Atlantic and Central Michigan battle for the Motor City Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
Here?s some numbers for this one:
Florida Atlantic went 6-6 straight up this season but did well against the spread, going 7-5 ATS while Central Michigan went 8-4 SU and barely kept its head above water going 6-5 ATS.
While this will be the Owls? Motor City Bowl debut it will be the Chippewas? third appearance as they have gone 1-1 SU but have yet to lose a Motor City Bowl against the number going 2-0 ATS?Central Michigan lost 51-48 against Purdue last year but covered as an 8-point underdog.
The last 20 times that the Chippewas have been favored by 8-points or less, they?ve racked up an 18-2 record SU and a 14-4-2 record ATS while Florida Atlantic hasn?t done well when underdogs of eight or less going 6-8 SU and 7-7 ATS in the last 14 games in that situation.
SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting heavy action on Central Michigan with close to 80% of the volume wagered on this tilt landing on the Chippewas.

Meineke Car Care Bowl
North Carolina Tar Heels vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
Let?s not kid ourselves, the University of North Carolina is a basketball school, but I recently discovered they had a football team as well and they?re not that bad. They?re not ?BCS? good, but an 8-4 year has them playing in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, matching up against a West Virginia program that also posted an 8-4 mark.
Neither were profitable against the number this year as the Tar Heels stumbled to a 5-6 ATS mark and West Virginia only paid off four times in their 11 lined games.
Both have a history at the Meineke Car Care Bowl with the Mountaineers losing the inaugural game (when it was the Queen City Bowl) to Virginia by a final of 48-22; the Tar Heels lost the 2004 game 37-24 to Boston College.
The majority of bettors are wagering on the favored Mountaineers with WVU seeing 70% of the volume.
Emerald Bowl
Miami Hurricanes vs. California Golden Bears
The days when Miami was challenging for a national title are long gone as it hasn?t been in the national title picture in a while.
So here they are in the Emerald Bowl after a 7-5 season (only 5-6 ATS). This isn?t your older brothers Miami program anymore, but they are getting better and could be a real contender in the next couple of years.
The smart kids at Cal aren?t just about flip flops and cool bongs?they can play ball. The Pac-10 sucked this year, but the Golden Bears were a legitimate national program, able to compete every weekend. They had a good season going 8-4 SU and 9-3 ATS.
This should be a good matchup. The Bears are favored by 8.5 right now, making the dog look attractive for sports bettors.
SPORTSBETTING.com is reporting the underdog Hurricanes getting 60% of the wagering action. Apparently that Miami U brand still carries some weight.
Good luck on the games, there should be some great bowl action over the next few days.
