It's almost Hallowe'en, so . . .

The events in this story took place in a little town in Mexico, and even
though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it's real.

A man stands by himself, hitchhiking. The night is dark, and a terrible
storm has come upon him. Hours pass, as he is battered by wind and rain,
and no cars pass. In the lightless downpour, the man can see only a few
feet in any direction.
Suddenly, a car approaches, emerging from the dark and the rain. As it
approaches his position, the car slows to a stop. Without conscious
thought, the man jumps into the car, and closes the door against the storm.
Turning to his left, he realizes with a prickle of horror that there's
nobody behind the wheel.
Slowly, but with gathering momentum, the car again begins to move forward.
Peering ahead, the passenger sees a curve in the road. Increasingly
terrified, he begins to pray, begging for his life. Suddenly just before the
car reaches thhe curve, a hand appears through the window. The hand turns
the wheel, and the car moves through the curve. The hand disappears.
The passenger watches, frozen with horror. Each time the car approaches a
curve, the hand appears. Then withdraws.
The road climbs slightly. The lights of a town appear in the distance,
blurred by rain. The car slows. Gathering his strength, the passenger
leaps from the car. He runs toward the light. Wet and in shock, he
stumbles into a cantina and gasps out a request for two shots of tequila.
Stumblingly, he tells the cantina patrons about what he has experienced. A
silence envelopes the bar, as everyone realizes that the man is crying. And
he's not drunk.
About half an hour later two more men enter the cantina. Spotting the
drenched and still-trembling man, one of them turns, and says to the other:
"Look Pepe, that's the idiot that got in the car when we were pushing it."
