A couple of things to keep in mind when capping the Ivy:

1. The home team usually wins SU

2. The Ivy teams play back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, so on Friday it's important to see who they're playing the next day to see if there's a look-ahead of if the coach is going to be resting players.

Here are my initial thoughts on Friday night's Ivy games:

Brown at Harvard -1.5

On paper these two look very similar. Harvard is 4-0-1 ATS vs Brown at 4-1-1 ATS. Both teams are 3-1 in conference games.

IMO Brown is a better team (by 5 points on a neutral court) but Harvard is very tough at home; the Crimson just beat Penn, the best team in the Ivy, the last time out.

But I like Brown and the points here, they're coming off a loss at home to Yale where the Bruins shot poorly and were outhustled on the floor and on the boards. Also, Harvard hasn't played in almost 3 weeks (last game was 1/12), I think they'll come out a little flat and might let the high-scoring Bruins (avg 82 ppg) run away with this one. Might be worth a first half play on Brown.

Cornell at Penn -20

Penn is easily the class of the Ivy and Cornell is 0-11 on the road. Easy call?

But I'll take Cornell to stay within 20; Penn is coming off a couple of tough Big Five wins over St. Joe's and LaSalle in the last week and I think they'll take it easy on Cornell as they're got another Ivy game on Saturday night vs a better Columbia team. Cornell is used to being a big dog and they've done a decent job covering some big numbers. The Big Red will probably try to slow the game down which will make it tougher for Penn to get up by 20.

Yale at Dartmouth +7.5

Sagerin would make it Yale by four but I'll take Yale to cover here even though the Bulldogs have to play Harvard in Boston on Saturday. Yale is 3-0-1 ATS on the road and they own a huge advantage on the boards in this one. I think the Bulldogs will use this game as a shooting practice and if they start hitting their 3s this one could get ugly.

Columbia at Princeton -9.5

This Princeton team is not as good as the ones in years past but they're still better than Columbia. The Lions are much better on their home court than away but they're coming off a nice 12 point road win at Cornell. IMO Princeton will win SU but not cover as the Tigers are one of those teams that tend to play to the level of their competition. And Columbia is a team that can just hang around until the end.

These aren't my final plays and I would love to hear other thoughts on these games.

Back later.

Hey super you know more then me.... but I like Dartmouth gettin the points at home. I dont expect them to win but I think its too many points for a home game. I also like Harvard tomorrow too. I can see them winning by 6-8 points.... again you know more then me so tell me why we are on opposite sides

Your reasons for Cornell make a lot of sense. Why not call off the dogs with a tougher game the next day? Maybe they never get the chance to lead by 20, but if they do, Cornell will have a good chance to backdoor it.

How can Harvard have 3 weeks off? Are their sesmesters different from us poor state school slobs?

1. The home team usually wins SU

It would be tough to go with Brown for the whole game given what you said above. Still, what you said about the first half makes a lot of sense also.

Looking forward to your final decisions....

Think your POD will have to be Cornell taking 20 points. . . I absolutely love this Penn team and they have made me a lot of money this year, but they have played too many games in a one week span with St Joes last Saturday and La Salle on Tuesday. . . now they have to play Cornell on Friday and Columbia on Saturday. The win is all that matters and I think Penn will play several off the bench in order to rest their starters for the more important game on Saturday.

Nighthorse --

Yes, the Ivy semesters are different than most other schools. They have exams after the Christmas break instead of before.

I remember my sister, who went to Brown, having to spend her whole Christmas vacation studying while I goofed off!

re: Brown at Harvard

Last season after a 16 day layoff for first semester exams, Harvard eked out a home court 80-78 victory over Hartford, a team that was 4-24 last year.

re: Yale at Dartmouth

Yale has some very good players as demonstrated by their nice win over Brown in Providence last Saturday.

Chris Leanza who led the team in scoring and assists last year played 11 minutes vs Brown in his first game back from injury. Leanza should get even more time in this game. Dartmouth has no one who can challenge 6-7 Paul Vitelli (leads the Ivy with 8.6 rpg, including 12.7 rpg in L3) or 6-8 TJ McHugh (6.1 rpg) on the boards.

Freshman guards Alex Gamboa and Edwin Draughan average a total of 23.6 ppg and have been named Ivy rookie of the week a total of four times.

Yale has a deep bench with Leanza and 6-7 forward Josh Hill averaging 8.6 ppg and 5.6 rpg in his L5.

Yale leads the Ivy in rebounding margin (+5.5) and is second in scoring offense (78.9 ppg).

Yale swept Dartmouth last season and the Bulldogs are shooting better away from New Haven: 44% from the field and 36% from the arc; which is probably why they're 3-0-1 ATS away.

Dartmouth is 0-3 ATS at home.

There's no question that Yale will be looking ahead to their game vs Harvard on Saturday night, but IMO Yale's bench can still beat Dartmouth by 6.5.
