Could somebody explain to me exactly what smart money is? The recent posts by NCU have been very interesting and enlightening to me, but I still dont understand what is meant by smart money. I understand the part about the "syndicates" and how they bet, but WHY is their money the smart money??? Is it simply a fact that deep pockets = smart money?? What do they know that we dont??? Is Maddux whispering in the trainers ear, "Hey I dont feel too good today" and the trainer passing along that info to these syndicates? I cant believe that they can do more homework than some of the guys I see here. I could spend 8 hours a day analyzing every game about as well as can be expected, but in the end, my measly $50 wager isnt gonna move the line an inch....and therefore wont be construed as "smart money" to anyone but myself. So what makes their bets so smart??

I believe there exists a close-knit group of sportsbettors who have line-making skills on a level equal to or greater than Las Vegas or CRIS (Costa Rica International Sports).

I also believe this group of individuals prepares/sets lines and totals (just as Vegas does) and has projected game results.

I also believe this group of individuals has a large bankroll.

At the Stardust Casino, on a given Sunday evening around 7:30 PM, the college football lines are first made available to "preferred customers."

Many of these "preferred customers" are "beards." Its my understanding that a "beard" is merely someone who is placing a large wager for someone who chooses to remain anonymous.

If there is a large enough discrepancy between the Vegas line and the line created by this close-knit group of line-making sportsbettors, that side is pounded one way or another.

That's my definition of smart money.

This is just my opinion. The stuff about the Stardust and "beards", I picked up at another site.

Thanks folks, I appreciate the responses.

Buddy....if you or anyone else can extrapolate on someone you referred to that would be great.

We all try to set (or maybe guess) at the opening lines for various sports...does anyone care to provide an explanation on how to do this effectively for various sports?? If its too involved, then dont worry about it but it sure seems like a valuable thing to learn. I am sure it cant be explained in 50 words or less. Thanks.
