A Tale of Two Favorites
By SPORTSBETTING.COM
The NFL got off to an early start with Thanksgiving Thursday football, resulting in all three favorites covering the spread in the trio of matchups ? two of those teams, Dallas and Indianapolis, were laying big numbers (the Cowboys were listed as a 14.5-point fav at home and Indy as a 14-point chalk on the road).
There are a few other heavy favorites still to kick-off in Week 12, including of course, the granddaddy pointspread of them all, the New England Patriots (22.5-points). The Steelers are also being asked to cover a big number (16-points) in their Monday night matchup.
It is interesting to note how the betting public is approaching the two largest favorites of the week.
The television series ?Everybody Loves Raymond? featured the zany adventures of Ray Barone and family. The NFL doesn?t do sitcoms, or dramas for that matter, but if there was to be a sports betting equivalent, it would be called ?Every Bettor Loves New England?.
Books are clearly tiring of the losses incurred because of New England?s domination that they?ve set one of the biggest lines seen since the Steelers were playing the expansion Bucs as a 27-point favorite back in 1976. They are hoping this sky high line will work to counter the betting public?s infatuation with the Pats and the subsequent pay outs.
As mentioned, SPORTSBETTING.COM has the Pats listed as a 22?-point favorite over Philly, but the steep line still hasn?t seemed to deter the public?s passion for all things New England, as the Pats are seeing 80% of the action, while the ?Over? is getting 95% of the total wagers. If New England blows the doors off the Eagles this week, look out as the spreads keep rising.
- While the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers were favored by 27-points against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that would finish the season 0-14, the 2007 edition is also heavily favored against a Miami Dolphins team that is currently 0-10 with SPORTSBETTING.COM currently listing the Steelers as a 16-point favorite.
But despite having the NFL?s sixth best scoring offense (26.9 points per game) QB Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers aren?t getting similar treatment as New England, in fact the early betting action is coming in on Miami.
The Dolphins and rookie QB John Beck are seeing 60% of the betting action at, with only 40% directed at Pittsburgh. As for the Total, again, unlike the Patriots, bettors aren?t giving the Steeler offense much respect, as it is one of the strong ?Under? games so far this week, with over 70% of the volume looking for the game to end below the posted number.
- An underdog that?s getting a lot of attention this week is the Denver Broncos. They are coming off a short week, where they defeated Tennessee 34-20 on MNF covering as a 1-point favorite. QB Jay Cutler showed why he was chosen in the first round back in 2006 as he completed 76% of his passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs. In Week 12, Denver sees itself listed as a 2-point underdog against the Chicago Bears and will be counting again on Cutler to lead them to victory.
The Broncos are seeing 65% of the betting action and the majority of bettors aren?t expecting Denver to duplicate its offensive output from last Monday as the under is getting heavy action at 85%.
- But the public isn?t wagering strictly on unders. The over is getting a surprising majority of the action in the Washington-Tampa Bay and Baltimore-San Diego games.
Despite ranking 17th and 19th in points per game in the NFL, the betting public is leaning towards the ?Skins and the Bucs going over. SPORTSBETTING.COM has the total set at 37? with 80% of the action going to the Over.
Although they are currently ranked No. 10 in the NFL in scoring offense, San Diego is struggling compared to the numbers they put up last year when the Chargers were tops in the league. If there?s one constant in Baltimore it?s a smothering defense and this year is no different.
Currently the Ravens own the NFL?s sixth best defense in terms of yards allowed but rank 15th in the league when it comes to points allowed and that is probably accounts for why the betting public is wagering that the Ravens and Chargers will go over the total of 38?.
As it currently stands 85% of SPORTSBETTING.COM?s customers are wagering on the Over.
If you want to throw some Canadian Football into the NFL mix this week, the CFL is celebrating their championship game, the Grey Cup.
It will be a battle of two of Canada?s prairie cities as the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers get set to do battle in Toronto in the 95th edition of the Grey Cup.
Whether you like Canadian or American football enjoy the rest of your Thanksgiving long weekend.
