The African Top 10 remains unchanged in the first month of 2002 with mostly friendly matches being played.

South Africa played no recognized matches and remain 2nd in Africa, gaining 3 World places to 31st.
Swaziland played no recognized matches and remain 32nd in Africa, 132nd World.
Namibia played no matches and remain 19th in Africa, 101st World.
Zimbabwe lost 3-0 to 75th-ranked Kuwait and beat 80th-ranked Qatar 2-0 in away matches; they climb one African spot to 11th and three World places to 65th.
Other notable changes:
Ethiopia (35, up 5 Africa, up 17 World) are the African Movers of the Month and achieve their highest ranking in two years after winning the Cecafa Cup
Burundi (30, up 3, up 12 World) are at their highest ranking in 11 months after tying 2-2 with Ethiopia in regulation time of the Cecafa Cup quarterfinals
Rwanda (32, up 3, up 11 World) are at their highest ranking in 11 months after reaching the Cecafa Cup semifinals
Mali (22, up 1, up 4 World) are at their highest ranking in 10 months following 1-1 home draws against Ghana and Zambia and 2-1 wins over Burkina Faso (at home) and Egypt (away)
Djibouti (49, up 2) achieve their highest ranking in over two years despite inactivity this month; they overtake Niger (50) and Seychelles (51), both of whom hit record lows after 18 months inactivity
Lesotho (34, down 4, down 8 World) are at their lowest ranking in 8 months following inactivity this month
Gambia (40, down 4, down 7 World) are at their lowest ranking in four months following inactivity since November 9
Guinea (23, down 1) hit a record low after losing 2-1 away to Morocco
Tanzania (39, down 2) and Sierra Leone (36, down 3) hit record lows following inactivity
