Mr. McGain,

Regarding the Montana St -8 / Montana matchup, I thought you might find this interesting (In addition, Fletcher has Montana St -8 as one of his 5 star plays)

.GAME NOTES: The state of Montana will be represented in the final game of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, but the Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State Bobcats must first settle the matter of which team has the honor in tonight's semifinal clash. Montana entered the tournament as the fifth seed and earned tonight's semifinal appearance with an 82-64 victory over Northern Arizona in opening-round action yesterday. The win pulled the Grizzlies overall record in the regular season and postseason to an even 14-14 mark. Montana State has been strong all season, racking up a 19-8 record overall and winning the regular-season conference crown with a 12-2 mark in league play. The Bobcats are carrying plenty of momentum into their first postseason match, as they finished the regular season with five consecutive wins. Montana and Montana State have met 260 times in their history, with Montana State holding a relatively small 134-126 advantage in the series. The Bobcats cushioned their lead in the series with a season sweep of the Grizzlies this year. Both wins were rather convincing and quite similar, as Montana State won 76-56 at home and 75-55 on the road.

Dan Trammel paced Montana with 17 points as the Grizzlies routed Northern Arizona by 22 points to earn a berth in the semifinals. Shane Christensen and Ryan Slider each added 14 points, while Slider also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. David Bell added double figures for Montana with another 10 points in the win. The Grizzlies connected on 60 percent of their shots from the field and outrebounded the Lumberjacks by a 38-30 margin. Montana jumped out with a 9-2 lead to start the game, but Northern Arizona climbed back to within 16-15 with 11:25 to play in the opening stanza. The Grizzlies maintained a slim advantage throughout the rest of the half and took a 32-30 edge into the break. Leading 39-35 in the second half, Montana sealed the Lumberjacks' fate with a 26-15 run that gave the Grizzlies 65-50 lead with just 3:37 remaining in the game. Montana finished the regular season ranked fourth in the conference with 71.6 ppg, while opponents were tallying a slightly higher total of 73.5 ppg.

Montana State enters into its first game of the postseason with a 13-16 record in Big Sky tournament play. The Bobcats have collected two tournament championships in their history, with their most recent crown coming in 1996 against Weber State. Armed with the top seed in the conference, Montana State has a good chance to make a return trip to the championship game, which it last appeared in during the 1998 tournament. This year's squad is led by Damir Latovic, who finished the regular season with team-high averages of 11 points and 7.8 boards per game. Jason Erickson adds 10.7 ppg and connects on 46.3 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. Aaron Rich tallies 10.5 ppg on 51.1 percent shooting from the field, while James Clark rounds out the double- figure scoring with 10.2 ppg. The Bobcats ranked seventh in the conference in scoring at the end of the regular season with 70.0 ppg, but held opponents to a league-low 65.8 ppg. Montana State shoots the ball well, as evidenced by its number-three ranking in field goal percentage (.468) and number-two ranking at the charity stripe (.711).

The postseason often yields different results from the regular season, but much can be deciphered by the previous two meetings between these teams. Montana State routed Montana both times by 20 points, which serves as proof that the Bobcats are the better team. Montana State will make it 3-0 against the Grizzlies tonight as they advance to the championship game. The title game will take place tomorrow between the winners of this contest and the Weber State/Eastern Washington semifinal matchup.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Montana State 77, Montana 60
