When the first half ended he said "Lots of action, 31 total points scored." Why would he need to tell everyone how many total points were scored.

It seems like every week he says something.

I found a great audio clip of one of those things from a year or two ago, but can't for the life of me find it right now. It was a Miami/Chicago MNF game where one of the teams scored real late to put it one point below the total and then went for two.

Al starts talking about how a lot of people in the country need some pepto bismol right now, and then updates the total points in the game -- something like there are 36 total points right now (pause) and Miami has 27 of them -- and then as the pass falls incomplete, goes "The pass was UNDER.... thrown."

good stuff

I don't mind it at all. In fact I find it amusing. I just thought this one was a little over the top. I have never heard an announcer tell the total points scored in a HALF.

Clem- I think it's great. I always find it amusing how the NFL tries to distance itself from gambling, when in fact the two are so intertwined. So I always enjoy when Al makes his little references.

I like him. Can think of many, many more who I would replace with him.

Sidenote, I have a buddy who is a sports announcer. He does play-by-play once in a great while for an SEC school, and side-line reporting every game plus play by play in college hoops, and etc. other sports. He has never been into sportsbetting, but I finally convinced him that to people who are gambling, announcers who have no clue of the line really sound stupid sometimes. He still doesn't bet the games, but he always is aware of the line now and agrees that is something important to know when doing background work before calling a game. Sometimes, now, I can even pry "nuggets" of good information about games that I can't get elsewhere.

The point about the NFL distancing itself from gambling is also pretty funny. I agree that on the surface, the NFL and NCAAF act like they hate sports gambling. The reality, though, is that we wouldn't be having the NFL opener on a Thursday, several NCAAF games every Thursday and some on Fridays too if people weren't betting on it. Nobody on the east coast gives a damn about BYU/San Diego State on a Thursday unless they have money on it, lol!

This is kind of on the subject about stupid things sports announcers say.

I was watching the Cowboys/Chargers game and it was tied 14-14 at the half.

I don't know who it was that said it because my head was turned toward the computer.

This was said right before the 2nd half kickoff

"The team that plays better in the 2nd half is going to win this game."
