The Jets lost starting DT Evans probably for the season.

NFL suspends DT Evans indefinitely

NFL.com wire reports

For more info on Evans
NEW YORK (June 27, 2003) -- New York Jets defensive tackle Josh Evans was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy for a third time.

Evans was suspended twice by the league for violating the policy during six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He missed the first four games in 1999 and was suspended for the entire 2000 season.

Under the terms of the program, players who violate the substance-abuse policy after a one-year suspension are out indefinitely. Evans' reinstatement will be determined by commissioner Paul Tagliabue in consultation with medical experts.

"This is unfortunate and we're disappointed for Josh Evans," Jets general manager Terry Bradway said. "He worked hard and contributed to our program. We have to move on. We feel good about the players we have, and the depth at the position."

Because of the previous suspensions, Evans is subject to random testing 10 times each month. Last summer, he faced an indefinite suspension for a positive test as he negotiated a free-agent contract with the Jets.

NFL executive vice president Jeff Pash upheld Evans' appeal of that suspension and two weeks later the tackle signed with the Jets. He enjoyed a standout season in New York, recording a career-high six sacks, second best on the team, and 58 tackles, 47 solo.

Without Evans, the Jets could have depth problems. They most certainly will turn to rookie Dewayne Robertson, who was taken fourth in the NFL Draft two months ago.

Robertson left school after his junior season. He was a three-year starter at Kentucky with 48 tackles, a team-high five sacks and 13 quarterback pressures last season.

Jason Ferguson is the other starting tackle, with James Reed and Alan Harper listed as backups.

Several other players have been suspended indefinitely.

Cornerback Dale Carter of the New Orleans Saints, a four-time Pro Bowl choice and Rookie of the Year in 1992, sat out the 2000 season and was reinstated for 2001. He violated the policy again and was suspended indefinitely last July, only months after signing a seven-year contract with the Saints. He was reinstated in November after missing eight games.

Defensive tackle Leon Lett of the Dallas Cowboys was suspended indefinitely before the 1999 season and then reinstated Nov. 8. He also missed eight games.

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Darrell Russell of the Oakland Raiders was suspended for the 2002 season and remains barred from the league.

Dt Evans suspension will have a profound affect on the Jets.

The Jets have already lost:

--Starting WR Coles, who QB Pennington relied on last year, To the Redskins.

--Starting OG Thomas, their best run-blocking O-lineman, to the Redskins.

--Starting Kick Returner Morton, who beat Buffalo by himself in the opener last year.(to the Redskins)

--Now the Starting DT. He waas supposed to teach 1st round draft pick DT Robertson.

--1st round pick DT Robertson can name his price. He will want the 1st pick of the draft money. The Jets will have to cut players to sign him. Either way, its going to be a mess.

I dont have the season W/L O/U stats in front of me, but the Jets should be an under.

Also, the Redskins should beat the Jets in the opener. Some people think the Jets will be mad the Redskins attacked their roster during the off-season. However the players think different. They are businessmen. They look at it like the Jets failed to keep the players. The former Jets players want to prove they should have been kept.

Without an up-the-front pressure from the Jets D, Spurrier will finally look good.

Note: If Rob Johnson starts for the Redskins, look for a 31-13 Redskins rout.

I agree 100 percent about the Jets/Skins game. Without a doubt the players look at it as a business, and, while I can't remember for sure, the Jets had a chance to keep at least one of Coles/Morton, or perhaps both, by simply matching their contracts, so if anything those players will be jacked up to show their old boss wrong. That was one of the games that stuck out to me when I saw the opening lines.

On top of that, I think Spurrier will do a lot better having a year in the league under his belt. Of course, that's a different thread for a different time.

No, actually you are right.

This is the thread.

Owner Snyder has paid a mega-buck to get a winner. If the Redskins start out losing at home to a New York team, there is going to be a lot of DODO on the lawn of the nations capital.

Snyder wants a winner NOW!!! If the Redskins lose to a team with many holes in the lineup, and the mega-buck players he got from the Jets contribute to the loss,............................

The Redskins cannot lose this game. Its almost a "must-win" game.

New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Jets defensive tackle Josh Evans has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violating the league's substance- abuse policy for a third time.

The league revealed Evans' third positive test in May, when he was nabbed for using marijuana.

"This is unfortunate and we're disappointed for Josh Evans," Jets general manager Terry Bradway said. "He worked hard and contributed to our program. We have to move on. We feel good about the players we have, and the depth at the position."

Evans' two previous substance-abuse policy violations resulted in him missing the first four games of the season in 1999 and the entire 2000 campaign, when he was with the Tennessee Titans. He spent his first six years in the NFL with the Titans/Houston Oilers franchise.

Because of his previous positive tests, Evans is subject to random testing 10 times each month. Last summer, he faced a similar indefinite suspension for a positive test. However, he won his appeal to have the suspension overturned and signed with New York two weeks later.

He rewarded the Jets with an excellent season, posting 58 tackles and a career-high six sacks for the team in 2002, starting all 16 games.

The suspension will likely make an immediate starter out of rookie Dewayne Robertson, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's NFL Draft.

Robertson will undoubtedly want a kings ransom, Steinbrenner money. Expect Robertson to get more than QB Palmer got from the Bengals as the #1 pick. It could get ugly with a capial U.

If you were going to wish for something, how would you like to be DT Robertson's agent??

The kid left college as a Junior. Now I am sure his agent is going to have him treated as a king. Plus living in New York, how much trouble can he get into.

The show has begun.
