Round 1 plays (1pt):

Nick Dougherty to beat Benn Barham -145 @ The Greek [available generally]
I'd be very surprised if this was close. In terms of ability, Dougherty has finished ahead of Barham in 18 of their last 20 common events; in terms of course form, Dougherty is a former winner of this event (2007), while Barham has missed the cut by 16, 5 and 17 shots in his his three previous appearances in this event.

Ricardo Gonzalez to beat Pablo Martin -111 @ Unibet [also available @ Extrabet and Ladbrokes]
Martin is another with a poor record in this event: he has missed the cut in both his previous appearances, averaging 75.67 over his six rounds. Gonzalez has a top-10 finish in this event (2005) and has six cuts made from eight attempts, plus he is a much faster starter in events: over the last 12 months, their 1st round h2h record reads 16-4 (and 2 tied).

Markus Brier to beat Marcel Siem -135 @ The Greek [available generally]
Opposing another player with a poor record in this event: Siem has missed the cut in each of the last four years here. In fact, he has a terrible record in Scotland in general, missing 11 of 13 cuts since 2005. That is not the case with Brier who was a top-20 finisher last year and in 2007 at the Open Championship at Carmoustie. He has shown much better form over the summer and should shoot the lower score tomorrow.

Outrights:

Rory McIlroy(12/1) e.w.
Chris Wood(33/1) e.w.
Paul Lawrie(66/1) e.w.
Johan Edfors(100/1) e.w.
- - I'm wondering if any of "my loose ends" on the season are spurred on by feelings of some loose ends on their part. Due diligence is not the story of my capping over recent weeks, so I just need to go into my customary September and thereafter mode and try to trust stuff whenever it feels like it has a fit, or I do happen to come upon a morsel of something that appeals . . Edfors is my Justin Rose of several years ago and Harrison Frazar of this year - too much of my money from the outset and nothing to show for it . . . I had to hold off on Lawrie for a while, but now he's likely to feature regularly . . . Links golf and Wood are certainly connected, but would someone feed the kid a sandwich . . . McIlroy finds St. Andrews easy, which if true is IMfatalisticO probably better left unsaid.

Stan, I'll quote and bump this in my first serious golf post in January (odds are at least +3000 that I forget to do so :yup ):

139th Open Championship:

Rory McIlroy(33/1) e.w.
- - Until 2009 I've always had ante-post plays for the Masters before the end of the West Coast Swing, and more often than not weeks or months in advance for the other majors. But in 2009 I definitely had no ante-post wagers for the first two majors, and may or may not have had one for one of the last two majors (i can't recall who). But I've got one I need to be on now, Tiger Woods notwithstanding.

Outrights (Dunhill Links):

Rory McIlroy(12/1) e.w.
