Barring a few last-second replacements, the rosters for next week All-Star Game are set, and as always, there are some major snubs involving guys who have carried some teams but didn?t get the votes. Let?s look at just that issue.
At 1st base we have Derrek Lee NL, and Mark Teixeira from the AL. But what about Carlos Delgado, Marlins? His power numbers could use a slight bit of help, but playing home games in Florida doesn't help. His OPS is better than the AL's other All-Star first baseman, Paul Konerko.
At 2nd base Jeff Kent, NL and Brian Roberts, AL. What about Chase Utley, Phillies? He's finally got a full-time job and is flashing power, speed and batting average skills. The fact that he had to fight through some early platoon issues with Placido Polanco makes his stats that much more impressive.

At 3rd base we have A-Rod, AL and Scott Roland, NL. Now lets consider Morgan Ensberg, Astros. Thanks to his recent tear, he now has 22 home runs, one more than the AL's starting third baseman, A-Rod. But thanks to the timing of the voting, Ensberg is not on the All-Star team ... yet. He'll likely be one of the first people called as an injury replacement.
At SS in the AL starts Miguel Tejada. In the NL we see David Eckstein starting. Why was Derek Jeter snubbed? It seems weird that he'd be left off the All-Star team, but Miguel Tejada is by far the best shortstop in the AL, and Michael Young's numbers are as good as Jeter's. Much like first base in the NL, it's hard to take three players from one infield position when you also have to fill other spots.
Catchers are Jason Varitek in the AL and Mike Piazza in the NL. Why was Jorge Posada, Yankees passed up? Ivan Rodriguez's long-term reputation helped him in the player voting, as did the fact that Detroit will host the All-Star Game.
In the outfields we have Bobby Abreu , & Vladimir Guerrero in RF. In center Carlos Beltran will start for the NL and Johnny Damon for the AL.
In LF Jim Edmonds will start for the NL and another BoSox OF Manny Ramirez will go for the AL. The Outfielders that were not voted in are; Adam Dunn of the Reds, Torii Hunter with the Twins, Cliff Floyd of the Mets all of which have a right to be there as well.
Some of the pitchers that did not make it are; Matt Morris, Cardinals. He may have the quietest 10-1 record in a long time, partly because he's behind Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder in St. Louis. Morris' strikeout rate is only so-so (70 Ks in 96 2/3 innings) but otherwise he does everything else right. Another NL pitcher that very easily could have made it is Brett Myers, Phillies: One of the pitchers to fall short in the final fan voting, he would've gotten a lot more respect if the Phillies gave him adequate run support. Instead, he has 110 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings and an ERA in the low 3's but just six wins. He deserves a better fate than that. Since the home runs are down by about 10% we are not going to see Giambi slam 6-8 dingers this year. He didn?t even make enough votes to get in and that is well as it should be. Steroid users all have to learn the hard way. Since the pitching is stellar in this game don?t expect to see al all out run-fest. If this game goes over 10 runs we will be surprised. Even with the premier hitters starring down the aces on the mound.
We see the AL winning this game by possibly 1-2 runs. More clutch hitting with the American League. It should be the reason the AL will wins this thing. We also see a bit more ?Charlie Hustle? on the AL and predict the game to being close to 5-3. This is nothing like it was in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Then the NL and AL use to fight for the win. Times have changed. This is now a brief display of the big contract players having it out. Very little pride involved anymore.
