Outright plays (total stake per play: 2pts)

D.A. Weibring to win 20/1 e.w. available generally
Don't expect these prices to last very long as Tom Kite has withdrawn, so will post these early plays. Ever since finishing 3rd in the season-opening MasterCard Championship in January, it has been a difficult season for Weibring as his highest finish since that event has been 11th as he has battled a shoulder injury since his second start of the year. But he did finally record a top-10 finish last week and until a triple-bogey on the 7th hole on Sunday, it looked as though he really could finish very high on the leaderboard. His shoulder injury appears to no longer be a concern that makes him very competitive for this event, which he won on this course in 2004 and lost in a playoff last year at the Tournament Club of Iowa.

Dana Quigley to win 25/1 e.w. @ BetFred and BetDirect
Quigley is another who has been battling physical ailments this year, though the problem has not been so much his high blood pressure with which he has been diagnosed, but the medication which has been leaving him feeling queasy and light-headed all the time. But it appears that the doctors are finally narrowing in on the problem. Further tests have diverted attention to a high count in his PSA and as a result he is now on his sixth different set of medication. And if last week is anything to go by, the latest medication appears to be less destabilising. He was very impressive on Sunday, in particular, shooting 31 for the back nine in very difficult conditions and if his new medication is allowing him to play without side effects, he is definitely value at these odds. Finishes of 8th and 4th in the last two years are the least that he should expect if not hampered by his medication.

Jerry Pate to win 40/1 e.w. @ Victor Chandler and BetDirect
By contrast, Pate has had a very healthy 2006 and it has resulted in one win so far (Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am) and a total of four top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. He did miss the cut last week after being in contention after the 1st round, but that is not a major concern given the difficult conditions in Oklahoma. All in all, with a top-20 finish on this course on his debut in 2004 and his performances so far this season, there is plenty of value in these odds against a comparatively weak Champions Tour field.

Matchup plays (2pts):

D.A. Weibring to beat Jim Thorpe -102 @ Expekt
Both players have very good records in this event, but Weibring has still finished ahead of Thorpe in each of the last two years and even though he has been struggling with a shoulder injury, he has still finished ahead of Thorpe in four of their last six common events. Weibring looked to be back to his competitive best last week and, if so, he should easily beat Thorpe again.

Dana Quigley to beat Jim Thorpe +102 @ Pinnacle
Will oppose Thorpe with another outright selection who appears to have returned to full health. Quigley can't match Thorpe in terms of course form, though it is still very solid in itself, but when Quigley is fit there really is no comparison between these two players. Even when Quigley has been feeling weak and low on energy, he has beaten Thorpe in half of their ten common events this year and beforehand, he had beaten Thorpe in 15 of their previous 18 matches. Quigley looks to have his energy back last week so the latest set of medication must have worked and that should mean a return to a Quigley dominance in this matchup.

Keith Fergus to beat Lonnie Nielsen -122 @ Five Dimes
Straightforward selection. Fergus has finished ahead of Nielson in seven of their ten common events this year, in each of the last two years in this event and closed with a confidence-boosting 69 last week in difficult conditions.

Outrights - FINAL RESULT: 0-3; -6.00pts

Weibring 61st
Quigley 52nd
Pate 46th

This was as bad as last week was good. The only difference being that the losses across all Tours were far greater than last week's profits across all Tours. Another false dawn.

Matchups - FINAL RESULT: 1-2; -2.04pts

Weibring/Thorpe LOST by 6
Quigley/Thorpe LOST by 5
Fergus/Nielsen WON by 5

Double-whammy on Weibring and Quigley as they reverted to their former selves after such encouraging performances last week. Thorpe only finished in 25th place, so it was not unrealistic to expect them to better that mark.
