2016 American Idol winner Trent Harmon is from my small town, Amory, Mississippi which has a population of 8,000, so everyone knows everyone.
He comes from modest upbringing as his Dad is a small farmer and has a catfish restaurant which is only open Thursday thru Saturday. Sold my father in laws truck and cattle trailer a couple of years ago to his dad after my father in law died and we got out of cattle and farming business (best business decision I have ever made).
This time last year Trent was working on the farm during the day, feeding the cows, cutting hay, cleaning the barn, etc during the day and working at the restaurant at night Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
He told me 3 weeks ago when he came home, joking that if he could win the Idol he would never peel another potato or slice another onion at the restaurant and laughed like hell.
Guess now his potato peeling and onion slicing days are over I cannot be more proud for him. He has decided to go into country music as it is what he loves and hope he has a great career.
The town put on a American Idol viewing party tonight at the town park and crowd was huge approximate 5,000 people were there. this weekend also is the annual railroad festival (Amory was founded as a railroad town halfway between Memphis and Birmingham) and we have a free concert
Saturday night with Jo Dee Messina and Doug Stone.
Not a bad weekend for a small sleepy Southern town where you cannot even buy a beer. Closest place to buy beer or a any alcohol is 10 miles away, which is a bitch but you learn to adjust. His father's catfish restaurant has to make on just food sales as it is against the law to sell beer or mixed drinks.
