Andrew Luck won?t participate in joint practices with the Browns
Mike Florio
,ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports?August 12, 2019

When the Colts and Browns get together for joint practices this week, three No. 1 overall draft picks will be in the same place. Only two of them will practice.

Via Mike Wells of ESPN.com, Colts coach Frank Reich said Monday morning that quarterback Andrew Luck, the first pick in 2012, won?t participate in the joint practices to be held on Wednesday and Thursday. The other two former first overall draft picks ? Myles Garrett in and Baker Mayfield of the Browns ? will be there.

As Wells notes, Luck has practiced only three times since injuring his calf in April. As Peter King pointed out last week, Luck has had three MRIs on the strained calf. That fact alone underscores not only the level of concern but also the degree of confusion regarding the reason for the condition.

Currently, the Colts are three weeks and six days away from Week One. All we need now is a tweet from owner Jim Irsay guaranteeing that Luck will be ready to go.

Rare extra bone could be source of Andrew Luck?s mysterious injury
By Justin Tasch August 14, 2019 | 1:12pm

You probably have never heard of the Os Trigonum, and the odds you have one are slim.

But Andrew Luck does have this extra little bone behind his left ankle, according to the Indianapolis Star, which suggests the ?triangle bone? could be the source of the Indianapolis Colts quarterback?s mysterious leg pain which will keep him out the rest of the preseason.

The Colts still don?t know the exact nature of Luck?s injury, the Star?s Gregg Doyel reports, despite general manager Chris Ballard calling it a high-ankle issue after owner Jim Irsay said in a radio interview that Luck had a bone problem. Approximately five to 10 percent of humans have the Os Trigonum, which is considered useless. Luck had a shot to numb the area where that bone is, but it didn?t solve the issue.

Luck originally was diagnosed with a calf strain in March and has only practiced three times during training camp. The 29-year-old missed time during the 2015 season with a lacerated kidney and missed the entire 2017 season after shoulder surgery.

The start of Luck?s 2019 campaign is now up in the air thanks to this pesky bone.

Report: Colts have ?guarded optimism? Andrew Luck can start season
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 16, 2019, 6:18 AM EDT

The Colts want to know who their regular season starter is soon.

And they apparently haven?t ruled out the possibility that it will still be Andrew Luck.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Colts have ?guarded optimism? that Luck will still be able to open the season.

Whether that?s simply hope of things unseen, a wish, or based on medical information that they know but aren?t communicating well isn?t clear at the moment.

Luck?s calf strain/?small little bone?/high ankle issue in his left leg has been an issue all offseason and kept him off the practice field, as he?s been limited to working with quarterback tutor Tom House.

The Colts will want to see him on the practice field before they can feel confident about his ability to actually stay there, or else Jacoby Brissett is in line to start.

Colts coach Frank Reich said they will evaluate quarterback Andrew Luck (ankle) in the "next couple of days." Luck worked on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium before Saturday's game against the Cleveland Browns. His workout included footwork drills where he went side-to-side before attempting a pass. Luck's had a difficult time with side-to-side movement due to the pain in his left ankle. "Really no further update," Reich said. Luck, according to several people, has been doing workouts like that in private as he continues to work his way back from his calf and ankle injury. This next week is a big one for Luck. Reich has said he'd like to have an idea if Luck or Jacoby Brissett will start their Week 1 game at the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after their third preseason game on Aug. 24. Brissett was 8-of-10 for 100 yards and a touchdown against the Browns
