Andrew Luck isn't going anywhere.

The Indianapolis Colts today announced their franchise quarterback has signed a five-year contract extension through the 2021 season, a deal that will make him the highest paid player in league history, according to an NFL source.

Owner Jim Irsay tweeted the news.

Luck, set to enter the last season of his five-year rookie contract with the team this fall, would have become an unrestricted free agent next March if he and the Colts failed to come to an agreement. All told, Luck will make $140 million over the next six years, according to Irsay.

?I am thrilled and excited to continue with this great organization,? Luck said in a team release. ?I am thankful to the Irsay family and Mr. Irsay for providing me with this great opportunity and the trust that they?ve shown in me. I can?t wait for this season to start.?

Irsay had originally eyeballed July 4 as a target date to complete the deal, though he said on several occasions negotiations could last until training camp. Instead, the Colts and Luck were able to come to an agreement before the turn of July.

?This is an exciting day for the organization and Colts fans around the globe,? Irsay said. ?Andrew is the consummate professional, possesses extraordinary talent and is our leader on and off the field. When you consider what this team has accomplished in four seasons with Andrew under center, you cannot help but be thrilled about the future.?

Though expected ? both sides have long declared a desire to work something out ? Luck signing on the dotted line Wednesday is significant. He has committed to his future in Indianapolis for at least six more seasons, and the Colts have cemented themselves as contenders in the AFC for years to come.

Luck is the latest in key offensive building blocks the Colts have invested in in recent months. Pro Bowl receiver T.Y. Hilton is signed through 2020. Left tackle Anthony Castonzo is signed through 2019. Tight end Dwayne Allen through 2019. Center Ryan Kelly through 2019.

And, now, the most important piece of all, Luck is inked for six more seasons.

This unit will get the chance to grow together, to win and lose, and chase championships for years to come.

QB Andrew Luck's 5-year extension pays him $75M over the first 3 years, source said. Slightly less over final 2 years.

make me wonder if these owners and players of this era will ever set up a fund for the players who blazed the trail for this gigantic money known as the NFL.
