best wishes to everyone this holiday weekened.
first it is good to see the way Vimy Ridge is being remembered 90yrs. later. wide news coverage, they repaired the war memorial and a well planned ceremony. When learning history in high school, never learned about Vimy, though studied Dieppe. the worse cdn. defeat in WW2. probably says quite a bit a how sometimes cdns look at their own history.
by the Paul Harvey (rest of the story) and news, hear him once or twice on the radio. anyways someone was sitting in for him and went on how weak the British navy was and how easy it was for Iran to take the sailors and push around a weak Britain. in the end diplomacy worked and UK navy is one of the best in the world.
he went on to list all the western allies of the US and claimed that they cut their defense budget and the number of people serving in the armed forces.
he mentioned Cdn.
Never let facts get in the way of story, in fact Cdn. has increased its defense budget and is growing the number of people in the armed forces. also Cdn. has made a huge contribution to fighting the Taliban in Afganistan. 2400 cdn. soldiers are in the most dangerous region in that country and doing a great job.
Annual Reports
these are stocks I own in my DRIP/SPP plans and have them for 10 yrs. or more, on average.
some interesting facts.
1. Sunlife basic earnings per share 2004 2.91 2005 3.24 2006 3.62
Return on common shareholder equity 2004 12% 2005 13.15% 2006 13.8%
annual report also does a good job of showing their growing worldwide operations, especially in India.
2. Suncor production (thousands of barrels per day) 2002 239.5 2003 251.5 2004 263.3 2006 294.8
Net earnings (millions) 2002 743 2003 1100 2004 1076 2005 1158 2006 2971
Return on Capital Employed 2002 14.2%, 2003 16.3%, 2004 16%, 2005 14.3%, 2006 30.4%
3. Enbridge 2006 earnings per share 1.81, 2006 total shareholder return 14%,
Ten year average total (counts divs) return per year 19%, compared to TSE 10%, SP 500 8.4%, group avg. 11%.
(noterobably does not do this again, but 8% average over 10 years can probably achieved.)
4. BNS (Scotiabank) 2006 earnings per share growth 13%, retrun on equity 22.1%, total return to shareholder (counts divs) 2006 18%,
ten year average 20%.
2007 goals returns on equity 20-23%, earnings per share growth 7-12%,
productivity ratio of 58%.
5. Bank of Montreal 2006 earnings per share growth 11.6%
Return on Equity 19.2%
Return on Equity 2002 13.4%, 2003 16.4%, 2004 19.4%, 2005 18.8%, 2006 19.2%
one year total shareholder return 2002 16.2%, 2003 33.4%, 2004 20%, 2005 3.7%, 2006 24.1%
earnings per share 2002 2.68, 2003 3.44, 2004 4.4, 2005 4.63, 2006 5.15%
6. Cdn. General investments (CGI) 10,000 invested in CGI would have returned just under 469,000 in 25 years. 16.6 per year, compared to 129,000 10.8 for TSE.
CGI Net asset value increase (average) 1 year 29.6%, 3 years 28.2%, 5 years 23.4 10 years 14.5%.
compared to TSE 1 year 17.3%, 3 year 18.6%, 5 years 13.1%, 10 year 10%.
the numbers all look good, and that is why they will be considered long term investments.
thanks
