Yes, Following up on what Scott said. I read Nolan's column as well, very informative, yet a sad dose of reality. Being in NY here, the cost of living is high, many people laid off from NYC stock mkt related jobs, etc etc. I worked at golf course for a few years and did alright. Was wondering if in LV, with the ton of golf courses, maybe being a starter, pro shop guy, etc etc. They dont pay a ton, but golf courses take a lot of people to run and Id think maybe some jobs available at some but I have no idea about LV.
secondly, major area of concern to me and fletcher has alluded to this is the crime in LV. Nolan, Im curious your comment on this, I have been in nice working class area my whole life, never have lived in the inner city or near it and seen shootings, drugs, many burglaries,etc.. I was also looking at different apt complexes in the LV area within 10 mins of the strip and such, saw some decent prices, but again could be shit areas.. I remember Fletcher saying to avoid the area near stratsophere, etc. Is there any decent apartments, I know to avoid N.Las Vegas as well, bad area. I obviously cant afford anything in the suburbs yet, what apt complexes would either of you reccomend, or areas within maybe biking distance (2-3 miles) from the strip, or like 10 min car ride, and not in an area where Id or someone else would hafta fear for their life, getting robbed every time they walk around, etc
This may sound stupid and not making any sense, Im just trying to raise general points here all over the map, I know Nolan said 25k minnimum to live, thats fair enough. I am asking basically about specific areas re:crime and such, because its hard enough making a damn living be it gambling or anything else, let alone worrying about yourself every second your walking around, not a pleasant feeling....anyway, apparently jobs in sportsbook industry not out there, would be cool to break into, but 8-9 an hr just wont pay the bills, apparently too many 20 somethings around it sounds like...Thanks in advance for replies, and happy capping, g luck to all this weekend and the season

Re: Another LV Question for Nolan/Fletcher

***My replies follow......

***I have no knowledge of this subject. Sorry, but I can't answer the question. I play golf occassionally, and if I learn more about this I will post something later.

secondly, major area of concern to me and fletcher has alluded to this is the crime in LV. Nolan, Im curious your comment on this, I have been in nice working class area my whole life, never have lived in the inner city or near it and seen shootings, drugs, many burglaries,etc.. I remember Fletcher saying to avoid the area near stratsophere, etc. Is there any decent apartments, I know to avoid N.Las Vegas as well, bad area.

***I know I'll open myself up as a target here for saying this, but other than petty crime (stolen property, vandalism, etc.) there appears to be very little DANGEROUS crime. I have been coming here for years, have walked and ridden in the worst neightborhoods numberous times (Naked City), I routinely ride my bike at 3 and 4 in the morning and have never even been approached by anyone making a serious threat. Lots of homeless, yes. Obvious drug dealers and users on some corners, yes, But if you mind your own business, you are safe in this city. Of course, I had long hair up to last week and maybe the theives thought I was just as meancing. If you look as dangerous as the criminals, maybe that's your free pass to safety (I don't know -- just speculating). Contrast this to Washington, DC where you can't get out of your car at night in some spots, and you better not dare have car touble in some areas -- and LV is MUCH safer in terms of dangerous crime in my opinion. But so far as petty crime, it's about the same.

***There are many gated communities. Most are affordable. Best site to go to is "apartments.com" where they have lots of property listing, pictures, the rent prices, etc. They will mail you a apartment finder guide too.

This may sound stupid and not making any sense, Im just trying to raise general points here all over the map, I know Nolan said 25k minnimum to live, thats fair enough.

***I'm talking for a person in thier 20s with no overhead. SOme people would need close to double that. If you don't have health insurance, you bettter count on more like $35,000.

***I'm not here to promote LV, my comments are just a reflection of what I see. Off topic -- someone asked about casino jobs. ONe of the best markets for casino jobs might be the new Seneca INdian Casino they are building near Buffalo. They are hiring in all departments now. I had someone from the executive office e-mail me if I was interested to go work for them, but I have no interest. Still, I looked over the situation and for anyone who is in upstate NY looking for work, this casino is going to be a good source of jobs. Go to "casinocareers.com" and you will see dozens of listing for this casino.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

First off, Thanks for the reply Nolan, as always good stuff. Didn't expect you to know about golf course stuff, just thought since Ill have 3-4 yrs of experience when I move out to LV, If I do, just wanted to see if thered be anything, but since you don't know, Ill look for more info at another time.
The stuff you said about crime is encouraging at least. I personally think your nuts to ride your bike at 3 or 4 am, Id do it where I live now because crime rarely happens, but in LV theres people out all night whores, drug dealing, etc..but like you said, I guess that happens everywhere, ive just never lived in a big city. Theft I guess is an issue anywhere. The main thing I was meaning to say was, and apparently it doesnt happen which is good, just didnt want to find myself moving to an apartment in a real bad area, where Id hear gun shots and stuff late at night, Im sure Im paranoid possibly, but that happens in some places. Also, I heard car theft major major issue there, but again, thats probably anywhere, and locking bike, and probably having a car anti theft device is a wise move.
Also, auto insurance I just thought of. its high as hell everywhere, people in Nj cant even get it, and Im sure its high as hell in Vegas with all the incompetent drivers, crowded roads, more chance of someone getting into a fender bender and the like. car costs are insane anywhere, bike is smart as to avoid spending lot of $$ on gas too. but insurance Im sure is high, and you have to go to DMV upon going there...Dont know if you have anything to say about this, but I drive a honda accord 98, I know theyre like the most stolen car, but I think having the club or something will deter people. dunno if you have anything to say re:this stuff.
Health insurance, yes thats a major thing. Im young, but none the less, an unexpected illness could god forbid happen, knock on wood, but who knows, you cant leave yourself open to that. Problem as a gambler is you you dont get it, and need to pay through the a$$ for it, but Ill worry about that later, I guess 35 would be accurate then, to account for this
re:Dealing cards, yes, thats a point, Im down on Long Island not near upstate but Id maybe look into that. Got a few tax issues regarding gambling also I wanna get cleared up at some point I guess can just look up an accountant and ask em... Thanks for the help Nolan, if you have anything to add post it, I may have more thoughts later as I ponder things, keep up the good work for this site,

Mike

thx fletcher. You must have meant the other guy private peetey, If you go look back I didnt say any cheap shots, simply said you guys are busy and rightfully so, other things in life besides this forum. Thx though, I will at some point email Jack for your phone # since you said I could, I could definitely use a somewhat helping hand if I move out there alone, someone to tell me where to/not to go, etc at first and some stuff you know by being out there. I may not move out there for 6 mo's, 1 yr, 1 yr 6 mo's, I dont know it depends. But I appreciate the offer, much easier to talk via telephone then on here, thx again and g luck, the days off are needed once in a while, g luck with all, Ill give you a ring sometime in the future most likely and hopefully you can give me some odds and ends to help me Id appreciate it,
