Another One Bites The Dust

To paraphrase Britney Spears, ?Oops, it happened again!?
If you?re the #1 ranked college football team, enjoy the party while it lasts, hook up with all the cheerleaders you can, take advantage of the dinners, cell phones, cars and trips that the alumni toss your way and those free grades profs give you?because the pattern is such that your stay at the top will be a short one.
The Texas Longhorns were the next team in line to find out how difficult it is to hang on to the nation?s #1 ranking. Last Saturday they met the same fate that befell the likes of USC, Georgia and Oklahoma; they got beat.
Not only did they get beat, but adding a twist to the knife was who they got beat by ? an intrastate rival, Texas Tech. In a highly entertaining battle, the Red Raiders came out on top by a 39-33 final.
Texas backers took a hit on both fronts as not only did they drop in the polls, but their team didn?t cover the spread for them as a 4-point favorite. This was the heaviest wagered on game of the day, with both sides seeing their share of the action, but by kick-off, the underdog Raiders had the betting public?s attention, receiving just over 57% of the action.
Chalk one up for the bettors as the Texas Tech straight up win and cover meant a loss for the books in this tilt.
The result saw the Longhorns tumble to fourth spot in the BCS standings, while TT pole-vaulted to No. 2.
That big loss for Texas left the door wide open for an Alabama Crimson Tide promotion and they seized the day.
Listed as a 24-point favorite against Arkansas State, the Tide still managed to win and cover in a 35-0 victory.
Alabama moved from the consensus No. 2 spot to No. 1 in the all the rankings; but for how long?
Turning to the NFL, Titan backers had a good news/bad news weekend. Good news ? your team is still undefeated. Bad news is the lucky ones would have pushed on your bets at -3, but a lot of those who bet the game earlier would have lost, as they most action came in on them at -3.5 or higher.
The Packers took them to overtime, but a 19-16 win brought them to 8-0 on the year.
Some people have said that the New York Giants were just a hot team that won the Super Bowl, as opposed to a very good team, but the G-Men are proving people wrong this year.
The Giants upped their overall record to 7-1 and covered an 8.5-point spread in a 35-14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants have been a profitable play this year, as they?ve racked up a 6-2 record against the spread.
The Cowboys are in a free fall, going 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in their last six games.
Don?t get us wrong, we like gadget/trick plays but the Miami Dolphins seem to be running the ?Wildcat? offensive formation to death and the Denver Broncos planned for it, shutting the Fish down every time they did the direct snap thing.
Still, Miami pulled off an upset covering as 4.5-point underdogs against the Broncos in a 26-17 win.
In their annual meeting, the New England Patriots traveled to Indianapolis to face the Colts. Peyton Manning and company won the game 18-15, unfortunately for Indy bettors, it wasn?t by 7-points, meaning the Pats covered the spread.
The NBA season got under way and although it?s still early, here are the top money teams.
The Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors have yet to lose a game against the spread both sitting at 3-0 ATS.
The New Orleans Hornets and Phoenix Suns lead the association with 3 Overs a piece.
True to form, the Los Angeles Clippers are winless both SU and ATS at 0-3.
It was another interesting week in both the NFL and NCAAF.
Good luck this week.
