I'm sure God can't wait to resume his (or her) walk with this gem...

?Family values? congressman says he?ll resign over affair

Indiana Republican Rep. Mark Souder announced Tuesday he would resign from Congress, effective Friday, because he had an affair with a staffer.

Souder said in a statement provided by his office that he has "sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff."

He scheduled a news conference in Fort Wayne on Tuesday to discuss his decision.

Souder won a bruising Republican primary on May 4 to be nominated for his ninth term representing northeastern Indiana. He's known as an ardent "family values" congressman, and says on his official website, "I believe that Congress must fight to uphold the traditional values that undergird the strength of our nation... Studies consistently demonstrate that it is best for a child to have a mother and father, and I am committed to preserving traditional marriage, the union of one man and one woman."

Souder, 59, said he also would not be a candidate in the fall election.

Story continues below...

"I believe it is the best decision for my family, the people of northeast Indiana and our country," he said in the statement.

"In the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon, often twisted, for political gain," he said. "I am resigning rather than to put my family through that painful, drawn-out process."

Fox News said in their original exclusive report breaking the story that there might be details of the affair that would land him in congressional hot water -- indicating there may be more serious improprieties than simply sleeping with a woman who was not his wife.

"Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee," Fox News said.

Souder won the Republican primary over car dealer Bob Thomas, who spent much of his own money on television commercials portraying Souder as a career politician who wasn't a true fiscal conservative. Souder countered by emphasizing his A-plus marks from the National Rifle Association and 100 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee.

Souder had been expected to face a stiff challege from Democrat Tom Hayhurst, a former Fort Wayne city councilman who lost a close race to Souder in 2006.

Souder did not provide details about the affair.

"As I leave public office, my plans are focused upon repairing my marriage, earning back the trust of my family and my community, and renewing my walk with my Lord," he said.

No, I don't know what his wife looked like behind closed doors. And I guess, in the Republican world, cheating on an ugly wife is preferred to being gay. Because, evidently, after you do the bad stuff, as long as you preach about morals, you can always resume your walk with your Lord.

Perspective is important, I guess...

Yes, I am getting on a politician who was elected in large part to his family values - holier-than-thou platform, who, along with many other supposed values-based politicians are hypocritical. I have admitted here, many more times than once, that I was wrong to support Clinton after the realities became public. It sent a terrible message to children, and a bad message to other countries. Clinton was wrong in doing what he did, and I was wrong to defend it - although the situation is completely different in the way I'm talking about.

Clinton did not make his political position and fame based on a right wing moral values campaign, nor stance. Quite the opposite, I'd say - he was pretty well known for arguable behavior even early on. So, I think it's appropriate to continually call out hypocrites like this - who turn out to be just that - whether it's cheating on their spouses with men or women. They hide behind a fake outward life appearance, and profit from it. And ridicule others for the very behavior they commit, while preaching other things. It's completely different, for most objective people, in my opinion. You can only see Clinton in this, as always - and if you can't see the difference, then I don't know what to tell you. But then again, I never know what to tell you... ;)

Garry / Chad
I didn't know Dems campaigned on being immoral??

We had the swamp draining and have NY and illinois govs go down--Ways and means chairman guilty of tax evasion--and wheres the drum beating now.

Only diff between Conservatives and dems is the Cons resign and the Dems become liberal icons and make windfalls writing books.

Just had all the hoopla on "the Lion" Keenedy a drunken killer and coward-

---and Bwaney Franks--gets caught punkin a page and caught will male prostitute--and still serving.

--so I guess we have to views on hypocrits

--those who get caught in affair and resign

--and those that kill-cheat-commit purgury--sodomy under most sttate statues and continue to serve--as their parties icons. :0corn

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

no comments?? How about this for liberal family values on last Presidents--

Billy Bob come from family of drunks--mother met last hubby at race track--has to pardon brother for dealing coke--they proceeds to make his own mark in history discussed above.

Barrack Hussein Obwana-- Mother-Hippy Whore who is one person welcoming committee for every black muslim with student visa--she do the marriage citizen con game(a couple times)--have child and abandom him like used condom--they proceed to apply those PHd's to the welfare system. Matter of fact just put another relative on welfare payroll--by getting amnesty for illegal Aunt. He's only pres in history who can't name all his brothers and sisters.

--I'll archive this so next time we have someone who supported/identified with/shared values of their liberal icons-
-bring up a rant of politician that has affair and resigns--I can give quick refresher course. :SIB

Gingrich cheated on his wife while assailing Clinton
By BEN EVANS

The Associated Press

Newt Gingrich remains popular with conservatives.

WASHINGTON ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.

"The honest answer is yes," Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson to be aired today, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

Gingrich argued in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.

"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge," the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton's 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction-of-justice charges. "I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed ... as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials."

Clinton was acquitted of the charges in a Senate trial.

Widely considered a mastermind of the Republican revolution that swept Congress in the 1994 elections, Gingrich remains wildly popular among many conservatives. He has repeatedly placed near the top of Republican presidential polls recently, even though he has not formed a campaign.

Gingrich has said he is waiting to see how the Republican field shapes up before deciding in the fall whether to run.

Reports of extramarital affairs have dogged him for years as a result of two messy divorces, but he has refused to discuss them publicly.

Gingrich, who frequently campaigned on family-values issues, divorced his second wife, Marianne, in 2000 after his attorneys acknowledged Gingrich's relationship with his current wife, Callista Bisek, a former congressional aide more than 20 years younger than he is.
:scared
His first marriage, to his former high-school geometry teacher, Jackie Battley, ended in divorce in 1981. Although Gingrich has said he doesn't remember it, Battley has said Gingrich discussed divorce terms with her while she was recuperating in the hospital from cancer surgery.

Gingrich married Marianne months after the divorce.

"There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them," he said in the interview.

Gingrich resigned from Congress after being reprimanded by the House ethics panel over charges that he used tax-exempt funding to advance his political goals.
